My brother lives in Yakima and never mentions the horses (which I love) he only talks about apple orchards and farms. I'm going to have to fuss at him. Love your photos!
Hi County Boy. Don’t ever too hard on your brother, I drove past them for years before I finally began appreciating them!
Nice to look at but they are a scourge on the range. Way too many, destroying the range as they search for food. All the black ones are signs of inbreeding. Their weakened condition makes them disease ridden, exposing domestic horses unnecessarily. Their overall impact on the habitat is more like vermin. But given all that, they’re nice to look at.

Nice ones, Sally.
I do understand your position. Unfortunately many herds have not been managed as they should have been. In some places, birth control is practiced with injections, limiting the population but in other areas, the number of horses is totally out of control.
Even so, they are my favorite subject.

My husband and I are moving from the Phoenix area where I spent many hours following the Salt River horses to Yakima Washington. Fortunately for me, there are wild horses here too. We took a drive yesterday and found them on the Yakima Indian Reservation. Access is really limited so these were taken from the highway right-of-way, mainly with a 400mm lens.
This has been a really tough year for them with lots of snow and very little food. Most are in pretty good condition but some are really thin. I'm hoping that as the snow melts, they'll be rewarded with lots of grass.
We also spotted some black tail deer along the river.
As always, I really appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures, Sally. I've photographed old horses in a nature preserve but that's not as exciting as shooting them in the wild.

I meant to say wild horses - not old.
