Here are 650 million bits of advice. : )

Take your time and transfer one folder - or part of a folder - at a time. That probably isn't necessary, but I don't like to have two drives running for hours and getting hot. As soon as you get everything transferred, make a couple of backups.

I keep all my data on a separate internal hard drive. When I get a new computer, I put the current drive into the new machine.

Copy the files, don't move them.

Wire it up, hit the button, fall to your knees and clasp hands together.

You should always copy and paste rather than try to transfer. My preference is to copy them to an external drive then copy from the external drive to the new PC. This leaves the original in tact and gives you a back up at the same time.

I copy to an external drive and copy from the drive to the new device. Takes more time but I don’t mind. I’d be backing them up anyway, so I’m just reversing the process.

Pray

Actually everything can be done by downloading and reloading onto your new computer but it takes time. I recently purchased a program from Best Buy (30-40 $$ range) that is called PC Mover. It allows a complete move or you can be very selective. It also came with a Safe Erase program that will erase unwanted files so they can't be recovered. The advantage of a program like this is speed. You can set it up, connect your two computers and forget it -- it will do all the work for you.

The only time I use the move command is on Email, to folders within the Email program.

Laplink PCMover Pro. My company used this program when it came time for my computer replacement.
Yes - - it's a VERY LARGE Company.
Moves your data, your apps, as well as the serial numbers.
What's your time worth ??
IF I ever have to build a new computer - - I will use this program to migrate my apps and data.

Great program for backing up without problems is Syncback. Backup all the folders you want for free.
