In my very uninformed opinion absolutely unbelievable. This is a website that is free that uses artificial intelligence to colorize a black-and-white photo.

https://colourise.sg

This is just a screenshot taken from an old photo on my iPhone And this is how it colorized it. Not perfect but I am duly impressed

I watched a motorhome blow up on I-10 once, all I had was an Olympus XA with plus-x in it, so my photos were all B&W. Wished at the time I had that shot in color, maybe now...

I just tried that with one of my photos. Wow, missed it by miles.

Yeah, I tried a gray-day, snow-covered volcano and it didn't do so well, but it did figure out the blue sky from a clear-day shot. Interesting.

I wonder if the more images it works with, the more it learns? But it would need some kind of feedback.

I've been looking for something like this for some time to try colorizing some of my old B&W genealogy family pics. I'll give this a try.
Thanks

OK, this could be fun to play with.
I wonder how it would handle different skin colors?

I tried one I figured would be straight forward:
a B&W of a steam locomotive and train
1. my B&W
2. the colorized result
3. my color version that I had made the B&W from

It might not be perfect and I can think of subjects it would fail on (esp in picking colors) but if all you have is an old B&W it can often produce an acceptable image.

It's not perfect but it is new. It will get better over time and as of the current time I am very impressed!

Hi Linda,
I read in an article that the colors selections are based on Singapore landscape elements. Do they have snow colored volcanoes in Singapore?

Interesting, I would consider using the site except for its location. A lot of data mining is taking place from what I have read from that part of the world..Maybe I am too cautious, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.. Your mileage may vary

I tried the site with a B&W that I took years ago.

This is what the "colourize" site came up with

I tried it myself and I'l give it 50%. It got the faces and the background okay, but we were wearing army khaki uniforms and they stayed grey with a touch of coloring here and there in the clothing.
