I just purchased a new to me lens from KEH. The lens was rated 9+ and it looks like brand new.
The lens I purchased is a Sony 24-105/4 for my Sony a7iii. I put the lens on. Took a few pictures and when I turned off the camera I heard a definitive clunk clunk. I turned the camera on and off several times and watched the aperture open and close as the camera was turned on and off, thus making the noise.
I have never noticed this with any of my other lenses, so I put my G Master 16-35/2.8 lens on the camera and what do you know? It makes noise, too; but not nearly as loud.
Is this normal? I was shooting in Manual if that makes a difference. Also, I tried it with OSS on or off and AF on or off and it didn’t seem to make any difference. The pictures are fine. Googling the problem referred to a whirling noise made by the AF. That is not what I hear.
For what it's worth I have several Tamron lenses that do the same -- a clearly audible deep click when powered on and off my Sony A and E mount bodies. But the noise from different lenses is at a different volume.

Good to know. Lenses on my Nikon don’t make that noise. On the Sony, it’s two sounds, like some things are falling into place?! Or back out?!

Or locking position, like IS.

F Y.I., I have a Nikon D3300 with 4 Nikon lens, and have changed them back & forth many times, I have never heard any type of noise you described here. Possibly a slight soft purr from the Auto Focus motor in the lens, barely even noticable.

On most Canon lenses the IS is very quiet however I have owned two different Canon 300mm f/4 primes and they both had very noisy IS systems.

So, I tried all of my lenses on the camera and the zooms are louder for some reason; BUT, I turned the camera on with no lens attached and I STILL heard the noise. After doing a little more research, I think it is the IBIS.

It’s different than the slight noise made by the AF that is barely noticeable, as you said.

Thats a Sony thing. It turns off almost a minute after you turn the camera off. Don't worry about it.

Don't the Sony systems use IBS, in body stabilization? Stabilization is electronically powered, as the power shuts off you could be hearing the floating sensor locking down.
My Sigma 60mm f2.8 Art for M43 cameras makes that noise. No issues with the images it makes.

Thanks for posting the results of your research. It is something to remember when we hear a noise we never noticed before.

Well, I never noticed it with my other 4 lenses; that's why I was concerned. Also, the noise is louder with the zoom lenses than with the primes. I guess that makes sense, since they are heavier!
So, I won't worry about it. Thanks!

It makes the noise turning on. Would that also be IBIS
