Request for advice: Any experience with Smear Away by VisibleDust? They claim this product is effective in removing oil spots (Nikon mirror lubricant likely culprit). I don't have time to send it in before needing it on an upcoming trip. Thanks

that cleaning solution along with the swabs they sell should be fine. I use something similar I get from Amazon as a kit with a bottle of cleaner and a dozen swabs.

Oil is more difficult you may want to look on the fluid make sure it is good for oil. You may have to do more than one cleaning cycle. You can always try it on a mirror as a test, put a tiny bit of oil on the mirror and see how well it comes off. Use a hand held mirror, or wall mounted if you must, don not use the mirror in your DSLR. LOL

I would take a trip for 15 Minutes to Kens Camera and have them clean your sensor.

I wonder how someone can determine exactly what the spots on the sensor are. I've used the standard cleaning fluid to clean sensors, and it's worked fine. I don't know what those spots were, but they disappeared.

"(Nikon mirror lubricant likely culprit)" If not that what else is in that environment that would cause the spots??

A possible alternative if the spots aren't too extensive is to postpone the cleaning until after the trip, clean up the spots in post processing and have the camera cleaned professionally, post trip.
(those type of spots usually show up in the top of the image, the sky)

I have this same issue repeatedly with my D750 and then with the D850. I was pretty sure the many spots in my photos were oil spots. Although Nikon claimed it was not, when I had my sensor cleaned at Mike's Camera they confirmed the problem was oil, which is why I am never able to blow out the dust.

My previous camera, a Canon T4i, never had a single spot in the three years I used it. It would seem unlikely that I suddenly became so careless that my Nikon cameras were exposed to large amounts of dust that I managed to avoid with the Canon. I love my D850 but do spend a lot of time in Photoshop removing spots from images, mainly in clear areas like sky.

I have not used Smear Away but I have used other cleaning fluids from Visible Dust and it does leave streaks! After using two swabs with 2 to 3 drops of fluid I had to blow on the sensor and use a new dry swab to remove the streaks. What I was using was "V Dust+" I'm now using Eclipse but it can't be shipped by B&H so I bought it off Amazon and it's half the price of Visible Dust. I had a problem with my 1DXMKII and after 620 shots I had to ship it back and it was excessive oil. They did not send me a shipping label and it was less then a month after I had bought it new from B&H and I was a CPS member. I have since taken it to a Nikon trained tech here in Spokane and he is the best. Professional Camera Repair by Ron Sinnott, 2317 E.17th Ave. Spokane, WA 99223 Phone 509-325-3934. One day service on a cleaning and he guarantees all his work.

Thanks all...I need to jump into post processing and spend the $$. Meanwhile I did order the Smear Away kit from B&H.

Thanks RRS.....The Smear Away product is designed for oil spots. Previous to this thread was the doubt that those indeed are oil spots. If they don't move with a fair amount of air pressure, I can only assume. We'll see what happens
