I visited the Memorial of that event in DC in 2015. What a spectacular monument. One of the flag raiders was Native American. When they returned to the States, they traveled the nation to help raise WW2 Bonds to help support the war. I didn't know that one of them was in the Navy, until I visited the Memorial.

Your right about the Navy Corpsman. I read a story about him. After the war he went home to a mid western state. He became a under taker. Raised his family and never spoke a word of his time during the war. It wasn't until he passed away that his family found out what he did and the medals he was awarded. His oldest son got special permission to visit Iwo jima with his mom and family. By the way I was one day old at the time. Salty sarge Ret USAF
