EOS R Firmware Update

I just downloaded the firmware update for my EOS R and was reading through the included PDF to refresh my memory as to how to do the update. There has been a significant change from updates for other Canons. A 64 GB SD card is required. Used to be that a 32 GB card worked fine. I know that because the largest cards I have are 32 GB. Now, I'll have to borrow a bigger card from a friend. So much for doing the update today!
Also, unlike updates on my other Canons, such as my 5DIV, part of the process involves connecting the camera to your computer via the Canon Utilities program. That program, and the firmware, has to be downloaded from canon.com, since disks are no longer included with the camera. A simple process, and it eliminates the need to tear my "office" apart looking for a misplaced disk!
So, make sure you have a big enough card and the utilities program, along with the proper cable, of course.

I guess I should do my updates in a more timely manner! After realizing that I couldn't update my EOS R until I got a bigger SD card I decided to check my 5DIV. I have done a number of updates on previous Canons of mine. 70D, 6D, 7DII. All were quick and easy with 32 GB cards and no need to hook to the computer as part of the process. I was sure (well, pretty sure) I had done an update on my 5DIV. Apparently not, since I quickly discovered that like my EOS R I would need a 64 GB card and would have to hook up to my computer. So much for my memory! Some times progress isn't progress, at least not when doing updates on the newer Canons!

You may want to check the firmware update instructions again. I just went through the process with my 5D mIV. It looks like the minimum size card needed is in MBs, not GBs. Also, though you can update with the camera connected to a computer this is not necessary. I just update to version 1.1.2 using just a 64GB sd card without any camera to computer connection.

Hope this helps you get updated sooner!

I appreciate your posts about your EOS R. I'm mighty tempted to get one, though my 5D mIV certainly is capable of doing all I ask of it...

You're right! I just reread the directions and it states to use a card that is larger then 64 MB, smaller then 128 GB. The GB threw me off, being the last thing that I read and it being unusual to see the two different designations in one spec.
Reading the PDF directions and going from step 2 to 3(1) makes it seem like a computer connection is required. UNTIL you go back to step 2 and look at the grey box at the bottom where it indicates otherwise.
Geez, I should have had more coffee before attempting to read anything!

As far as the EOS R vs the 5DIV, I certainly can't fault my 5DIV, but, for $1000 less the EOS R can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the 5DIV in most every capability and is an improvement in a number of ways, despite the claims of the naysayers, many of whom I suspect don't want their particular brand of mirrorless to face increased competition.
I wouldn't rush out to replace a 5DIV with an EOS R, but, for someone like me whose curiosity got the better of him (and who just wanted a new toy), it is most certainly not a disappointment. More of an eye-opener actually.

I had to read through the instructions a couple of times myself - they were a bit confusing if you ask me.
I'm eagerly awaiting future developments with Canon mirrorless offerings. The RP is mighty tempting simply because of its price point, but my next purchase will probably be a lens rather than another body.

I also shoot with an Olympus m4/3 system which I love because of it's smaller lenses, but have to admit that its higher ISO performance is quite lacking when compared to the 5DIV. And I have yet to find anything that fits my hand as comfortably and effectively as Canon bodies. Love 'em!

I guess I'll just keep shooting with what I have and wait to see what new and exciting things come in the future.
