Fugifilm X100f and Leaf shutters

As an introduction, let me say that I am a Photojournalist and I use Canon gear exclusively.

Recently I commented on a Youtube tutorial posting about Leaf shutters. I defended the use of ND filters and HHS first but, ... what I really should have done was take the time to study further to educate myself on the benefits of a Leaf shutter. I came to realize how little I knew about the comparison subject.

I will be covering the Amelia Island Concours D-Elegance in March with several interviews and am intrigued by the size, capabilities and especially the freedom allowed with flash. This camera is supposed to be much like the cameras used with film in photojournalism in years past and also many medium and large format cameras. It is quite rare in a mirrorless camera.

I would really enjoy any input from anyone who uses the X100f or anyone who has Leaf shutter preferential experience.

I plan on purchasing it in the next week... and the price is Great.

This camera and others like it are on my radar right now.
Their are 5 or 6 of these cameras that are popular. Leica, Ricoh etc etc
Their are a number X100F of them used on mpb.com
https://www.mpb.com/en-us/?utm_campaign=1414174_Presidents%27%20Day%20-%20US%20-%2018%2F2%2F2019&utm_medium=email&utm_source=emailCampaign&dm_i=3121,UB6M,6E53BI,34WAM,1
For some reason they are promoting this X100F camera right now.
I found Ricoh GR Digital II and Leica DX7 or CL of big and smaller prices.
Various famous street shooters have their preference. Some of these cameras having shortcomings
like no view finder etc.
I have the Sony RX100 mark 4 great camera. Has all the feautures. The Sony RX10 III which i own.
does the high speed flash that the X100F but in a bigger camera 24 x 600 zeiss lens.
I have cine and still primes. And a 50mm or 35mm has its issues. My favorite go to is my Sony a6300
with 16 to 70mm zeiss lens. Chamber had lost their camera woman and asked me to get some PR snaps
and this worked. Another issue here I started a post is micro contrast the tone and look of the b&w and 3D pop. The new high quality lens are for sharpness like the good Canons. Not the look of the shots. Check that out in new topics the responses were great.
Good luck. Tom

I purchased the X100F in December and have used the built in flash for indoor shots with good results. The leaf shutter permits fill in flash under bright conditions with an open aperature and high shtter speed. But I have not tried it yet. I will once it is not so cold and the sun is shining again. And maybe with the more powerful Godox Tt350.

What is the great price? I paid $1199 with no tax at Unique Photo in NJ.

I’ve gotten great info on Facebook groups in various areas of photography.
There is at least one on the Fuji X100 F that I’m sure would answer your questions.
You’ll have to join, but it’s free.

I had an X-100s for a while and really liked it, but never used the ND filter with flash as you described.
One of those cameras you wish you didn’t get rid of....

Comparing price vs performance is interesting. The Sony RX1R II has strengths but is more than double in price... but also, has a several draw backs.

The X100f is looking like a better buy at this point...

Ahhh, yes. Leaf vs Focal Plane Shutter....

When I was 14, my dad gave me his seldom used 4x5" Speed Graphic....which was at the time, one of the most popular press cameras used. It had BOTH a Focal Plane and a leaf shutter. (Sometimes the challenge was remembering that when using the focal plane shutter, the leaf shutter had to be open....and vice versa.)
I learned to use both shutter types, to achieve my desired results.

Focal Plane shutters are big and clunky...more mass, more inertia, more vibration to blur your image. In comparison, the leaf shutter (housed within the lens) is smaller, less massive, and causes much less vibration that deteriorates image quality. The old rangefinder cameras (which also didn't have a mirror to slap up and down) and TLR medium format cameras all had leaf shutters. Hasselblad, Bronica, Mamiya have leaf shutters.....because leaf shutters offer advantages.

One disadvantage of having leaf shutter systems, is that every time you buy a new lens, you have to also buy the whole new shutter....generally raising the cost of those lenses. A have a collection of 'PG' lenses for my Bronica GS-1....each has its own internal, electronically controlled, leaf shutter...made by SEIKO. Another advantage to leaf shutters is when using iTTL speed light...because they are electronically controlled and faster to respond (less inertia)....the exposure tends to be more uniform and accurate.

The Sony RX1R II is Full Frame. It seems to be an amazing camera for its size.
I was looking for the RX1 used. Decided to think about it.
