Insuring Photo Equipment

I am sure this was a recent topic but I can not seem to find it.

I want to cover everything from theft, fire, breakage and whatever else is available.

Do I do this as a rider on my homeowners or as a seperate policy?

Thanks.

Contact your homeowners agent about adding a "Camera floater" or purchasing a separate "Inland Marine" policy to cover your camera equipment. Much broader coverage than your basic homeowners policy will provide. You'll find more discussion here ... http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-56979-1.html

I got an inland marine policy from state farm to cover theft damage etc for $60 a year to cover $3000.00 of equipment.
Now I feel safe taking my stuff kayaking.

I have a rider on my home owners. cheap and well worth the peace of mind. Mine also covers repairs, etc.

I had a theft. My home owners policy covered it all.

State Farm no longer calls their policy Inland Marine in California. They changed it to "Personal Articles Policy" in California several years ago. Most insurance companies carry a policy for special articles.

Depends on the amount of coverage you want. With my insurance company you can add a homeowner's rider (mine's called "Scheduled Personal Property" ) for photography equipment but only up to a certain dollar figure (eg, $5,000) depending on whatever company you use. Above that maximum figure, you'd likely need a separate policy. Ask them what their maximum rider coverage is. They'll likely also want specific info on exactly what is being covered...my insurer did.

I have a renters policy with my car insurance. I've been told if you claim yourself as a pro, it cost more. In my case I just had to list all my equipment and and what it would cost to replace it and got it all covered for theifor damage say to a person say with my triped or sny thing falling over or triping over something that caused damage to someone for 3-5 dollars a month up to $10,000 which is my renters coverage with a $50.00 deductable cost.
