My Image Your View: Battery Point Lighthouse

Battery Point Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse sitting on a tiny island in Crescent City CA. It was originally built in the 1850's and is still a working lighthouse with its light beacon on duty each and every night. While not part of the Coast Guard Navigational system, it is still used as a private aid to navigation.

We were in Eureka for a week of hiking in the state and national Redwood parks up in that area. On our last day there we were chased out of the forest by black bears. Early in the morning, we ran into two black bears feasting on the berries that were in season. They weren't too interested in us, but my wife felt differently and let me know. So we left to try another hike about 15 miles north of the national park. There we didn't get more than a quarter mile down the trail and ran into 3 more black bears. After this, my wife said enough hiking for today. Since we were close the Crescent City, we decided to drive in for dinner. Afterwards, we ran across this beautiful little lighthouse, walked up (i.e. low tide) and took a short tour thru the facility. Finally, we walked down the breakwater that's close to the lighthouse and on the way back, the fog began to roll in. As we hurriedly walked back, I stopped and captured a few images of this lighthouse with its light on taken from the breakwater.

What caught my interest was the island, the late afternoon sunlight on the house and the incoming fog in the background. This is a straight jpg conversion of the unedited raw file. I'm very interested to see what you may do with it.

Battery Point Lighthouse is a beautiful little lig... (show quote)

How about a closer crop, B&W conversion and I tried to make it look like it was shot with good old Tri-X 400. Anyway, that is my take.

I wanted a bit more detail in the island itself. So, after doing some adjustments in LR, I went to NIK and used the detail extractor. Then, I tried to use the set points to apply it only to the island. Didn't quite work. Think I need to find out more about that (after watching about 10 videos!).

My take. Enjoy the details on the island and wanted to retain a sense of place.
