My first smartphone was 3G. My current smartphone is 4G. An improvement. 5G is now the future. I heard on the radio, that you should wait before getting 5G, because it still has kinks in it. Any truth to that? https://www.verizonwireless.com/5g

Right now there is almost no coverage, just in a few test markets. You should wait at least 6-12 months before even considering getting a 5G handset and service and should check your carrier's coverage for 5G (and cost!)

Verizon is the only provider claiming to offer 5G, but it doesn’t meet industry standards- https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2018/10/2/17927712/verizon-5g-home-internet-real-speed-meaning

Thanks for the info. My provider is AT&T. I suspect they will eventually jump on the 5G bandwagon, and compete. Unless Verizon has complete rights to 5G.

I have a Galaxy S-III and have no idea what "G" it is, and don't care.
It does what I need it to do excellently.
Why would I worry about 5G coming out? Or getting a new phone?

If you are satisfied with a nearly 7 year old cell phone, that works great. That's good. If it ain't broke, don't replace it.

5G is the wave of the future, but waves take time to arrive.

From what I've read 5g is not yet deployed at all, just rebranded 4g, better to wait at least a year. Same with those fancy hi res TV's, only in Japan test market so far.

That's my philosophy. Got the S-III when my flip phone broke in 2013.
Especially with things that I like and work well.
1979 Chevy Impala wagon (used, 2YO) - 14 years
1995 Ford F-150 Eddie Bauer Super-cab (used, 2YO) - 21 years (still in the family though).

The G is for "Generation".
We're on the 4th generation of wireless phone carriers and working on the 5th. The 5th is reputed to be significantly faster than the 4th, which was faster than the 3rd..........

It's going to be a while before 5G is generally available. I'm just hoping that someone around here puts up a few cell towers to improve my access to any wireless signal at all. I'm lucky to get 1 bar. In the house I can use the wi-fi but it doesn't work out on the road. I am way too close to New York City but the phone service here is something like being in the middle of the desert.

What’s a “G”?
I guess I was on the wrong track. With the prices of smart phones going up and up, I thought it was referring to the price....must be a different meaning. No one would spend 5 grand for a cell phone...would they?

Could be.

Some people would spend the money.
Some phones are up to a thousand dollars now. Give it time....

I don't need endless CRAP on my cell phone to occupy my every waking moment like the zombies in the street. I use a CHEAP flip phone for my few monthly calls when in the street. If I want to have a conversation with a friend or relative I use my home (land-line) phone with its clear reception. I am not burdened with constant neurotic need to "be in touch". Thousand dollar "phones" that are outdated every two years? "Sheesh!"
