This isn't about the pic, but find it interesting that the bands on the bunting's leg match the bunting himself!! LOL!! The colors obviously mean something to the bander, wonder what?
Great Q! i saw them and wondered how the heck the caught the bugger. They don't sit around and I doubt you could dart em.
This bird is a beauty. Unless you loose the sharpness, I would also crop out the out of focus branches. Otherwise, this is very good.

My guess is he was caught in a mist net, very commonly used by banders. The birds are tangled in the net as they fly through because they don't see it and carefully removed with no harm to the bird. Then they are measured, weighted, recorded and banded. I have done this before assisting experts who are licensed (not with buntings) and it is a fascinating experience. Each band means something.
