Hi, i have been trying to graduate from all my fun scene selection buttons to A mode but have alot of problems with the shutter being very slow.i understand i cannot control shutter speed in A mode, ( or can i) it is just too slow, inside or out. i have the f stop on 3.5 inside. with the same problem. using a d7000 nikon. i have tried some outside in the A mode. and will post one but still my subject does not seem very clear to me in the face area. and i did focus on eyes. what am i doing wrong . i will post one i have not pp.
If your priority is shutter speed, then you should be selecting "S" priority. However, it sounds like you might need to adjust your ISO to allow a faster shutter speed at f3.5.
Try using "P" mode instead, it will allow you to select either the shutter speed or the aperture, and will automatically set the other factor. And don't forget to select your own ISO also. This is a good learning step towards gaining full control.
Nice photo of a cute girl!
You didn't ask, but..
The pink dress and pink balloon work well. Need to straighten out the horizon a bit however.
bump up to at least ISO400. Next step get a good book like, Understanding Exposure 3rd edition by Brian Peterson. You have to understand Light and exposure to make your camera work for you. This book will get you there.

If the little girl is straight, doesn't it mean that it was a little hill ? All horizons are not straight...
A lot of cameras offer complete program shift where if you dial in more shutter speed it will shift the fstop.

you won't regret it! I am currently going thru Understanding Flash Photography...Bryan always make it an adventure of learning the basics and cutting loose with your own brand of creativity!!

That's a good point. Could be.
It is hard to tell, unless the girl was leaning into the wind to maintain her balance with the balloons overhead...? It just looks odd without a more definitive reference (like a pole or tree).
thanks guys! i actually love that the horizon is slanted. i dont know, maybe i am weird. but i think it gives it a little something more creative.
