I recently acquired the d850 which is a remarkable camera. I have had problems with my software not supporting the RAW photos from the D850. I store them on Microsoft one drive which will support the JPEG but not the RAW photos. I broke down and installed PSCC and LR which does support the RAW. Does anyone know why the RAW from the D850 seems to be different? The software would support RAW from my D5300.

Once there was a Windows that had "drivers" to decode raw files. Microsoft stopped doing that so you can't preview RAW files from newer cameras in Explorer on One Drive or any other drive. In some cases you can install "drivers" that come from the camera manufacturer.

Elements 15 will not support the raw out of the d850 either I have used Corel software for years and their latest and greatest will support but their raw editing is terrible it has gone downhill every time they upgrade it so Photoshop CC is wonderful but I still don't understand what the difference is

Each time a camera comes out it has a new "recipe" for its RAW files. You have to have newer software to go with newer cameras. Wth Elements 15 there may be a update in the Help menu to add the ACR tables for the D850.

This is one reason why raw is such a PITA - and why the manufacturers and software people get more of your money .....

One Drive and Windows 10 will support the RAW files from my D810. I don't know what's different about the D850.

In case anyone is wondering, the negative image is part of a test to see which is better, copying my old negatives on an Epson V800 flatbed scanner versus my camera with a 55mm f/2.8 micro lens. So far, it looks like the camera/macro camera blows away the scanner results. That's for another day when I get farther into it.

This happens with almost every new camera until the application is updated by the developer. You can get a DNG converter from Adobe and then convert the NEF files to DNG. The easiest thing to do is upgrade your software.

Adobe has supported the D850 since October 2017. No PITA here - free upgrade, otherwise use DNG converter until it is supported- it usually takes about 2-3 weeks after a new camera is released before they reverse engineer the file format and release a new version. Nikon is the PITA by not coordinating with the leading raw converter publishers so that when a new camera hits the streets the software already supports it. Raw on it's own is not a PITA at all, unless you have no experience with it. Then it could be a major PITA.

Not if you do not use it

Nikon provides free software for use with its cameras. They used to include a CD in the box but now you can go to a Nikon website and download Nikon View and/or Nikon Capture free of charge. Use them to open the NEFs and convert them to JPGs. Then you can load the JPGs into whatever PP software you like.

??? This approach defeats the purpose of having shot in RAW to begin with, may as well have just shot in jpeg.

Type in Raw Converter for D-850 in the search block and you will see the new Adobe converter.

Pentax gives you the option of shooting in DNG. I wish other manufacturers did the same. You buy a new release Pentax set it to output DNG and you're good to go at least as far as Adobe is concerned.
