We have an Asus laptop, want to install a 1 terabyte SSD and want to migrate my old hard drive (500) to the new one. Need more storage for photos. My IT guy is having trouble cloning the old drive to the new drive, it will take the operating system, but won't clone anything else. He's very experienced, but he's having trouble. Is it Asus? He's trying to get in touch with Asus support. Anyone have any experience with this?

Good timing. I have a 1TB WD SSD that I am about to clone my ASUS with. I haven't done it yet, and now I will wait until I hear what others have to say.

What brand is the SSD you have that your IT tech is cloning to?

recommend using Macrium Reflect to do the clone, then you'll need to expand the main partition on your new HDD to incorporate the rest of the extra 500GB on your new 1TB drive

Depending on how old your PC is it may not be possible due to the drive size (Thickness). Verify that they match before purchasing anything.

Can you a bit more specific about your Asus - model, size, and technique for cloning - software or hardware clone. Thanks

What version of Windows are you running on the Asus?

Ok...trying to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. It’s a recent. zen book model. OS is W10. It seems to migrate the OS system...but little else. The hd fits in the casing...but as I understand it , it has some special connectivity (physical) issues so we ordered a diffent hd to fit... still no joy.

Forget the brand of SSD, what software is he using to do the clone? I used an Acronis True Image OEM clone software provided by Crucial, the SSD vendor. You have to configure a clean boot USB stick for the copy and the writing of the clone, in a Windows shell, cannot successfully be done within Windows desktop OS. And, it took forever, in my case, to do a 2 Tb clone.

I was lucky that Acronis tech support did a remote connection to my system to assist in configuring the bootable USB stick that made the operation smooth.

I agree. The way to do it is with the aid of Acronis, first clone a usb connected drive, then clone the M.2

It's not surprising your tech is having problems. I've run a computer repair business for 15 years and dealing with these new M.2 drives your machine uses is a nightmare. Many computers were delivered before the M.2 standard was finalized and your machine may very well be one of the in between machines that won't have a larger replacement drive.

Iupgradedmy Asus about 6 months ago from 128gSSD to a 500gSSD. No problem at sll. Created a windows system disk with all the C drive data, then restored to the new drive. After that had to repartition to take advantage of the new space. All in all about 30 minutes including backup time.

I just upgraded my wife's asus laptop-installed a 1T SSD and added RAM- Since it was a Samsung SSD, I used Samsung Migration to clone the old HHD. Now the laptop went from almost being unusable to booting in 3sec.

When I put Samsung SSDs into computers, each one came with a cable and software to clone the drive and then copy it back to the Samsung SSD. I put one into a MacBook Pro - easy operation. The Asus should be an easy swap. I bet there's a how-to on YouTube.

It may make more sense to contact ASUS support and ask them for advice. I also have an i7 ASUS 17 inch laptop as my alternate PC. I have found ASUS support very helpful. https://www.asus.com/us/support/
