I stopped in a salvation army store yesterday and they had just received a Canon EOS Rebel XT and priced it at $39.99. it was Senior day, 30% off. I inspected it and it was in very good shape. So.......I got it for $28. Battery and charger was there, but no computer cable. Charged the battery, all seems ok. Now all I need is a lens to finish checking it out. It even was in the original box. I'm sure it will be ok.

Any way, I have a new toy. Reviews I read says it was a great camera in it's day. We will see....

The XT was my first dslr. I used it quite happily for four years, with just an 18-55 mm lens. Maybe you have my actual camera?

Linda, I shot Nikon, but when I saw this and it's on good shape, I had a sudden gas attack.... At $28, not much lost of it didn't work, but it does..... We will see how good when I get a lens.

I checked it out and don't seem to find any indication it was yours.... Shucks.

It's amazing what you can find when you pay attention. Thrift stores are good because their goal is to move merchandise, not hang on for the highest possible sale price. They get they products for free, so anything they get for them is profit.

I, too, started with the XT. It served me well for years.

The best thrift store is on line. It's called Shopgoodwill.com. It's a nationwide Good Will auction site. Has around 600 camera's on auction at any given time. You bid on items listed by Good Will stores around the country and when you pay a winning bid, the money goes to the store who listed the item and the store ships to you.

A bit sketchy on quality, but they answer questions and occasionally do returns.

I buy from them. Have used them for resale on camera's and guitars. Great place to buy clothes as well. Their biggest market.

I've had two Digital Rebel XTs that came from the thrift/recycle store where I work as the camera tester/refurbisher. Nice cameras overall. Both had the same problem...connecting to a TV with a video cable (3.5mm plug to RCA plug) did not work. Not a big deal, but check that on yours if you will want to connect it to a TV.

The computer cable is just an ordinary generic USB A to mini B. Not a special Canon cable.

That camera started it all for me. Recently used it as a 2nd camera on a trip to shed aquarium.
I began to think the camera was obsolete. Then I looked at some of the pictures and they have a nice look to them. The camera forces you to think about what you are doing.

Recomend a battery grip.
