Killdeers are very common here especially in the marshy areas, but really, everywhere. In the wildlife areas, they make a shallow dent in the edge of a gravel road and lay their eggs. I wonder how many get flattened by tires! These Killdeers were seen by me a month ago, and the female seemed to be wanting to mate. Not sure why as it was already getting colder. Pictures taken from the car. as walking around is not permitted at these two refuge autotours.

Great shots, Katydid, esp for not being able to get out of the car. Kildeer are scarcer where I am. We've only seen them a few times. Not sure where those images might be right now. lol

Nice captures !!! I see them nearby pastures in the area while out walking my dog.. I haven't seen their nests yet though. That said, I have had them feign an injury so as to divert me away from where they likely had a nest. Every time I had my camera with me, I saw none.

Thanks for commenting, Scott. Below is a nest I found last May. Easy to miss, don't you think?

These birds are such fun to have around. A pair showed up at my place a couple of years ago and had a nest nestled against one of my garden hoses. I was very careful to not move the hose! This year I saw the birds on occasion but couldn't find the nest.

Nicely done.

Fine set of photos, Katy!

I worked maintenance at the Toyota plant here in Georgetown, and we found a killdeer nest on the tar and gravel roof of the plant. Just four eggs laying together on the gravel! Pure luck to have found it.

Back in 2015 I was also lucky enough to be able to follow some chicks around. Cute as a litter of lab puppies! They hatch ready to go and are out following their parents on bug hunts as soon as they hatch. Hope you get to see some, too.
