As we all know, we are surrounded by taxes and fees. Nothing costs what you think it will. A friend came to visit and stayed at the local Marriott. Naturally, he paid a tax on the room, but he also paid a tax on the bed.

Now that they have taxes on the room and the bed, what will come next - toilet, shower, lights, TV, parking lot?

Believe it or not, we are the most taxed country in the world. Just pay attention.....there is a tax on everything. What do we receive in return? Think about it! Please, please don't tell me freedom! Taxes do not pay for freedom!

Taxes are what we pay for civilized society. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., in Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas v. Collector of Internal Revenue (U.S., 1927)

Does a civilized society lock people in cages for not paying taxes?

Hotel/motel taxes are outrageous and common ... and the locals don't complain much because the out of owners pay it.

I have usually seen that listed as “occupancy” tax.
