I have a 2011 15" Macbook Pro that is having intermittent reboot and freezing issues. I am looking into getting a 2018 13" MacBook Pro but have come across numerous articles complaining about the keyboards that are in post 2015 Macbook Pros. The 2018 models have a variation of this butterfly keyboard that is supposed to be an improvement of the 2016 and 2017 keyboards. Do any of you UHHers have a MacBook Pro from 2016 and how do you like the keyboard? I like the keyboard on my 2011 model, another option is to get a used/refurbished 2015 model.

I have the 2018 MBP and they added a membrane to prevent the issues seen previously. I have had it for several months and it has worked perfectly.

Have you considered making an appointment at the Apple Store in the Genius Bar to show them your issue?

I have read that but was going to wait a few months and see how the newer keyboards work before deciding. Looking the prices for Cyber Monday has got me thinking to take advantage of the prices now or wait for what I want to show up in the refurbished Apple website..

I am considering that and should take it in and see what the repair cost is and whether I should put the money into it versus upgrading.

Yes. That would be a good first step.

I recently purchased a 2015 model from an independent store selling only Apple computers. Immediately I had problems with keyboard characters flying everywhere when I typed. Thinking it might be the keyboard problem I've read about, I took it to the Apple store where the tech guy saw that my hands often touched the edge of the touchpad when typing, ever so lightly but enough to cause the problem. He quickly adjusted the keypad sensitivity and I've had no issues since. Those Genius guys are good! Supposedly, the 2015 and later models have the better screen quality as well.

If you are worried, for a small additional investment you can purchase a wireless Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse. I have and use both.

Apple specializes in designing beautiful hardware that is crap. Keep buying it and they will keep doing it.

I agree this is a good idea. I plan to employ both items in the near future when using my MacBook Pro at home.

My MBP is of the same or similar vintage: it has an optical drive so no need for an external drive to read and burn DVD/CDs; it has lots of ports so can connect USB & Firewire devices. It seems that Apple has dumbed down their computers.

We went from a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch to a 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch last December. Bite the bullet and get the new they are great graphics much better and runs much quicker. The reduction in weight is fantastic when travelling. I would buy another in a flash. And the keyboard has no problems whatsoever.

Sounds a lot like either 'sour grapes' or 'Apple envy' to me. I've been a happy Apple user since the home computer became available. No reason to want to switch. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Apple keyboard.

What year and make of a Mac laptop do you own?

My current MacBook Pro, is a late 2016-early 2017, 13" Retina display, 4 thunderbolt (USB-C) ports, 16GB RAM, 3.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 500GB flash storage.

For photo-editing, I have it paired with a Dell 4K monitor (P2715Q), and a Sandisk 1TB external flash drive.

It is fast, reliable, and intuitive.
