Why can't Photoshop be used as the default program for image files (jpg) on my up to date Windows 10 machine? I don't see the option to add it as a default program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled PS to no avail.

The default app for images is for viewing. PS is not a viewing platform but an editing platform. It doesn't do viewing and slideshows etc.

In windows 10 use the settings app and select default apps... You can change it to whatever program that is already installed on the computer.

I still have 7 - Look for the "Opens With" parameter.
I won't believe they took that away in 10.

You can. Use the 'Open With' option but instead of selecting PS or some other program, go down to the bottom to 'Other' and then go to PS where it's located and select it, designating it to be used 'always'. Then, when clicking on any .jpg, it will open in PS.

Both answers for Windows 7 and 10 have been given.
Personally, I would never associate JPG with PS, would hate to open PS each time I want to quickly view a JPG, but there are the ways on how to do it. Hope those answers solve your problem :)

To quickly view a JPEG I simply use Windows Explorer. I have the default application set to my primary JPEG editor for JPEGS.

Sounds like a good option, even more if it works for you

"Open With" is still there in Win10.
However, Win10 is picky about file associations, much much more so than previous Windows versions. You can use "Open With" to open a file with an app of your choice, but you can't always make it stick.

I use IrfanView64 a lot. I can set the file association for a jpg to IrfanView by using "Open With" and going to "more choices" and checking "use as default application" and highlighting IrfanView64. But when I try it with jpeg files it won't set IrfanView as the default. I have to change the jpeg extension to jpg. I can't set IrfanView64 to be the default on an mpg, but I can set IrfanView32. Using the space bar in IrfanView64 goes to the next file in the current folder (depending on how you have the sort set) and if you're viewing a jpg and a jpeg is next it will work just fine. Also it will work if an mpg is next, or an mp4.

It's one of the things in Win10 that I find to be a PITA.

You can choose ANY program on your computer to be the default to open a file type. You're not looking at the right option. Select Default Apps, then scroll down to "Choose default apps by file type". There's where you select Photoshop as the default app for the file type.

That sounds strange, but I can't test it here. May be a silly question, but have you tried setting IrfanView as default viewer for both jpg and jpeg?

I have. IrfanView64 is my default for several image formats but jpeg seems to be resisted. Also MP4.

Bummer.
Have you tried manually?
Click Windows icon and type this "Choose default apps by file type" until the option appears highlighted and press enter.
From there scroll down to look for .jped and .mp4
See if there when you click on the current associated app, you can select IrfanView.

Hope this helps.
Sorry if you already tried this, just trying to help :)
