This is a second group of images of Heimaey Island off Iceland's southern coast. It was formed by an undersea eruption only 5,000 years ago and is in one of Iceland's most active volcanic regions. I included 2 more of the cliffs at the harbor entrance to show the intricate rock formations formed from the cooling lava. An eruption in 1973 almost wiped out the town and closed off the harbor, both of which were saved by a brave band of 200 men who stayed behind after the Island was evacuated by the fishing fleet. Enjoy!

Nice photos, interesting story, but.....
what did the men do ..... against the lava flow?
Boris
Beautiful photos of a very strange landscape.
The power of nature is truly awe inspiring, Mark, and you have captured this region extremely well. What are the two white structures in some of the shots?

So glad you asked Boris. It will be part of my next post which will contain some photos I took of photos in the volcano museum. Basically they set up pumps and hoses and sprayed the flow constantly so that it hardened and diverted away from the town. Also 2 harbor dredges poured water on the leading edge of the flow and hardened it diverting the molten lava to a wider section of the harbor. I often wonder why they didn't do tis in Hawaii. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for visiting Bernie. The 2 white structures are generators which power powerful lights at the harbor entrance. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.
You're most welcome Transbuff. Thanks for the thumbs up.
