I had fun today photobirding at the San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, CA. Here are some of the highlights of my day. This was my first male Hooded Merganser, and the Roadrunner was a surprise. A flock of Pelicans took to the sky as I watched, circling overhead for 15-20 minutes...quite dramatic. Hope you enjoy these shots.

Just last fall I saw about four dozen White Pelicans on the Tennessee River, (aprox 30 miles North of Chattanooga).

I was amazed watching them swim in a single line groups of six to a dozen in a row then a long space then 6 to 12 again, repeat, repeat. They all followed the group in front. Just one line.

Loved watching them!

Yes, the flycatcher is pretty fantastic. I saw it in the same general location a few weeks ago but hadn't seen it since...until today. It spent about 10-15 minutes flying out to catch an insect then returning to the same set of branches high in a tree beside one of the ponds. It's such a beautiful creature. Glad you liked the picture.

A small group has inhabited this location pretty much all year round, but a larger group has arrived recently. When they take to the air, they soar on the air currents. They're larger and differ from the Brown Pelicans, which we also see frequently. The Brown Pelicans spend time at sea and soar along the surf line I groups from 2-25, diving for fish in the ocean whereas the White Pelicans don't usually dive for their food, dipping and dabbling away from the ocean. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Beautiful work. I can almost hear, "Meep-meep," from the roadrunner. Very surprised about where you spotted him. My Dad was an avid bird photographer and film maker back in the 50s, shooting 16mm color.

I was a little surprised myself, though this was not the first sighting at this location. It’s located next to a stream bed that allows access from the dry hills around the preserve. They get bobcats, coyotes (don’t know how Wiley they are), weasels, racoons, and other critters as well as a wide range of bird species. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Thanks for the kind, supportive comments, Corky. I had such a fun day out in the Reserve. Glad I could share some of that.

The first time I saw this beautiful species was just a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t know when I would see it again. When I saw it yesterday, I was really excited. It hung around as if posing for me. I didn’t mention it in my accompanying text because it’s so beautiful that it speaks for itself. It doesn’t need any comment...the picture says it all. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
