250 of the top runners (each boys and girls) converged in Manchester NH yesterday. The good news: While it was not raining, we did have 2" of rain the 24 hours previously, so the course was a challenge for both runners and spectators (more for them!). The bad news: 34F at race time!

Enjoy

FYI: #4 is my son

Hi David vt real nice shots. One thing though I don't see a #4. Thanks for the post.

Hi

Tom. Lens is my “standard” sports lens Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR on the D7200. Most of the day I was shooting about f3.2-f4, trying to keep my DoF not at the minimum but not far from it. The reason for not the minimum is that the runners are coming at me in motion, and I actually find that it affects my focus point. SS minimum 1/500 with auto ISO and auto WB. I usually try to keep ISO between 300 and 1200. I don’t go lower as the light can change faster than I can adjust, so keeping 1-2 EV about 100 allows a bit of wiggle room. I bring the SS (A and SS are manual with the auto ISO) up high enough over 500 to get the ISO where I want it.

Jules - thanks for the kind words. I have noticed that want I like to shoot is the intensity of the athletes in the midst of competition. I want to you feel their effort, pain, and success. Hence I like shooting on muddy bad days where they have to work really, really hard!!!!

David the first image is epic! publication quality for sure... absolutely perfect decisive moment... her arms/legs moving in rhythmic syncopation with the stellar grace of a prima ballerina... superb color harmonies latent within... her skin tone is outstanding... guessing overcast (cloud cover a.k.a. mother nature's giant softbox in the sky)... the virtual absence of hard shadows lend to the surreal ethereal aura latent within...

so beautifully done.... absolutely LOVE this epic first image... believe this one seriously needs to go into your commercial portfolio... word!

And yes the last image is classic marathon for sure and makes a marvelous pairing with the first epic capture...
you are a master of marathon recordation photojournalism.... please keep up the good work... looking forward to more of your breathtaking efforts...

Thomas - your comments blew me away when I saw them this morning, especially as I have come so much to appecieate what an artist you are.

The girl in the photo has been my favorate “target” all year on this team, between her natural beauty and athleticism. While I like most of what I have been able to shoot of her, these two are my favorites for the year. I did get lucky on the light. The sun was in and out on this 34F day, and for these, it was indeed cloudy overhead.

Alas, being a very new beginner and rank amateur, I have no professional portfolio. My aspirations are only to get nice shots for parents and, maybe if good enough, the local paper.

Thank you for the encouragement.

FYI. Ella finished second for her team in this race, but the story is deeper than that. She is the #2 runner on an incredibly strong team. For those of you know understand XC scoring, this team, in this New England championship, scored 74 points. The 2nd place team was 149!

Update on the girls team.

They went on through the Nike regional qualifier (#2) to get to the Nike XC national D1 championships last weekend. “My favorite target” above finished 78th in the country with the run of her career! We are friends with the family and the whole town is proud of her!

Unfortunately, Portland Oregon was too far away from Vermont for me to make the trek (if my son was there, it would be a different story). We did get to watch the live stream from Nike. Very cool. I wish I had a shot of her at this race to add to the “story board” collection from this race, as it is the final race of her HS career.
