Is there anybody who is using Nik P1000 and can post some comments. I have searched UHH and do not see member' pros & cons. B&H has a nice evaluation.

I Own a P-900, which is the previous iteration of the “distance grabbing” Nikon P-1000. It is a lot of fun, but the image sensor is ridiculously SMALL. A fun, NOT serious, camera. Almost of TOY, status. For REAL printable images, Don’t go there. Consider mirror-less. RJM

I have considered purchasing a P1000 and have viewed a number of YouTube reviews, a number of which I considered particulary useful. Some reviews are by actual owners, so may be considered more practical for prospective purchasers.

Yeah it's 300g heavier than my FX Nikon Df with the 24-85mm lens. Oh sure I can't shoot anything that's far away.

OK, thank you . I will wait for real owner who has used it. BUT...
I have spoken with a photographer using the "toy camera" and seen his photos on HD TV monitor. Quality was very good - I was an inch from buying it. Now I own a Nikon 7100 w 16-300 mm Tamron ="gear for every weather" and I am not quite 100% happy with long shots - sharpness. But it is mostly the operator's problem ... I know.

I borrowed a friends P900 for a day.
In a rocking boat I got a sharp picture of a Osprey eating a fish atop a telephone pole. The anti shake amazed me but cranked out to the max it is very jittery and really needs a tripod if you want decent pictures.

It is large and heavy, but no larger/heavier than some of the better DSLR's, I am told (maybe the 850?). And smaller, and more light weight if you were to try to attach a comparable reach lens to a DSLR. Is it a camera that you would expect DSLR quality from every one of its settings?? No. But then, neither is any Bridge camera. There are compromises when you move to a Bridge camera, which many of us have had to do out of necessity, or have done for backup camera purposes. There is an interesting chart in the DPReview of what it would take in size, wt., and cost to try to duplicate the P1000 with a DSLR.

If you do a Google search you will find many illustrations of use of the P1000. YouTube also.

Also Alexander White now has his book on the P1000 out and available at Amazon. His books are not only instructional on use of the camera but also outstanding in their overview of the camera.

DO Review gives it a rating of 73. I read a few commentaries that have a common observation that image quality is good near full zoom, but deteriorates as the zoom range is brought in. Basically, it's an expensive novelty.

My wife just got hers a few days ago and today was the first day for any testing at all. The light was awful, even in our sunroom but I wanted to see what it was doing.

It starts amazingly fast, about 1 second. That's a lot faster than either of my Sony's. It is big and heavy but reasonably well balanced so not hard to use. I hand-held all the shots and used P because that gives spot metering. The water glass was at an angle of view equal to a 500+ mm lens. I rate the VR (Nikon-ese for image stabilization) excellent. You can see in the photos of objects that the light was poor and also from the fuzzy shadow the dog casts. The colors of the cat's toy, the carpet, the clock on the wall and the dog are pretty good - accurate.

I don't like the viewfinder but I'm spoiled by the RX10's and I didn't like the one on the P900 either. I struggle get the diopter right and it's not particularly bright or large. I used the rear screen for these shots and that is the only way that my wife uses the camera.

The IQ is about the same as the P900 or perhaps a tiny bit better. I haven't checked to see if the raw can be better. None of my programs can read the raw files yet. I downloaded the Nikon program Capture NX-D but haven't tried it yet. The dynamic range seems quite limited but this is not a thorough test. See the one of the white dog. The sunlight coming in the window was grey and diffuse, not what you'd expect to cause blown highlights.

If we ever get any sunshine around here we will go snap some birds at full zoom but for now, this is all I have to contribute.

I recently posted some comments on P1000 in this forum.
You may have found them by now.
I've been using the P1000 for little over a month and using the premise that a picture speaks a thousand words I have posted an album on Flickr containing about 50 images.
These photos were taken of varying subjects at different distances, focal lengths and lighting conditions.
Most were shot as JPG and were cropped, cleaned up and resized in Photoshop.
All the samples were resized to 3000 px on longest side for speed of uploading..
