craigslist has a 24mm f2.8 for $100 & a 50mm f1.4 for $75.

Is it smart to buy used. Can they wear out to where they're not good anymore?

I'm such a dum dum. lol. The 18-55 is the kit lens that came with the body. So I already have it! Oops!

oh my. So confused. Found a few reasonable 50mm & 18-55mm. Which one is better for quality portrait photography?

Also, here is my facebook photography page. Check out my albums & tell me what ya'll think? http://www.facebook.com/KahiauPhotography

Thanks!

I have a few lenses from ebay. They were old Nikon lenses not made any more. But I asked the guy a lot of question before I buy. And always pick one with close to 100% feed back.
It depends on your budge, get the best glass you can. But if you have the 18-55, I would use it and see what you can do with it. After you shoot a little you will find the length you use all the time and then you can get a prime that length. Don't buy just to get a lens. Find what you need and then buy the best one you can. :)

Try some of the older film lenses. They have a killer 105mm. You would need to use manual focus but they are available on eBay and other places for a decent price.

The Nikor 100mm 2.8 series E was a real sleeper.
I had one for a while.
Though not as beefy a build as the famous 105 2.5, it was very sharp and a bit more compact.
Should be able to get one for around $100.

From Ken Rockwell:
"The meters of cheaper digital (D90, D5100 and below) and cheaper film cameras (N80 and below) will not couple (or work at all) with this lens, so you'll be on your own guessing exposure using the rear LCD or an external meter, or get a tiny Gossen Digisix meter and hotshoe adapter, or the free Pocket Light Meter app to meter manually."
