Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Puerto Penasco (also called "Rocky Point) Mexico is about a 4 hour drive from our home in Tucson and is a favorite destination for people all over Arizona who want to get away to the ocean. You will notice that I did not say "get away from the desert" as it is part of the Sonoran Desert and is even more of a desert than the landscape around Tucson or Phoenix. However, it is on the Sea of Cortez and is a quaint little town whose main economic pursuits are fishing and tourism. After suffering from all the nasty political ads leading up to yesterdays election, my wife and myself drove to Puerto Penasco last week and spent 3 days in a charming B&B that was within walking distance of almost everything in town. The main part of town is located on the Malecon which is a completely renovated area along the waterfront and is the location of most of the restaurants, bars, gift shops etc. We walked everywhere and really enjoyed the ambience and hospitality of the town and its people.
We ate fresh seafood every night with the average price per meal running about $10 and spent several early evening happy hours at bars with beautiful ocean views and great margaritas. Hope you enjoy the photos of this little known (at least to people outside of Arizona) destination.

We share a home with two other families on the remote Estera Morura estuary and have enjoyed Rocky Point for 40 years. Nothing better than shrimp, clams, oysters on your patio balcony overlooking a sunset. Our home, though very comfortable, depends upon solar and generators, trucked in water; but that all really adds to the "getting away from it all" experience.
