Thanks to all who took the time to view and comment. A lot of the credit goes to the wonderful Sony 100-400 lens...it has a sharpness and rendering quality that I love.

Great shot of a beautiful young Cooper's Hawk. Probably not just visiting, he has a hungry look in his eye.

Thanks for the ID. My wife was happy our little Shih tzu was in the house!

Very nice. There's just something about raptors.

Cooper's Hawks belong to the genus Accipiter characterized by short, rounded wings and long tails which give them maneuverability in heavy cover. Accipiters are ambush hunters sitting quietly waiting for prey to appear. They are mostly bird hunters but will not turn down a squirrel or small rabbit. They are amazingly quick and maneuverable. To see one explode out of cover and make a kill is an experience of a lifetime to a birder or photographer.

They are, as far as I know the only Accipiter to have adapted to the urban environment. Cooper's Hawks in my area have staked out every bird feeder in their territory and patrol them regularly. The typical hunting pattern is a low approach to the feeder shielded from observation by a fence or wall. When they are ready they explode over the wall, pick out the bird they want, usually a Mourning Dove, and make the kill. They do miss sometimes but not often. They will not return to that feeder for a week or more to allow things to cool off before making another kill.

Oh, I have never herd of a Cooper's Hawk taking even a really small puppy let alone a dog, even a Shih Tzu.
