Initiating D850 Focus Shifting

As far as I can tell, the only way to start a series of exposures in the Nikon D850 Focus Shifting program is by manually touching "start" on the touchscreen. This strikes me as odd, as I've always been taught to go to great lengths to avoid touching the camera when initiating a close-up exposure. That's why I have a cable release. Am I missing something? Is there a way to initiate this feature via a cable release? Via self-timer? A wing or a prayer?

When you touch start the mirror raises and the camera pauses for a few seconds before starting the sequence. It has been my experience that this pause lets the camera settle before shooting. It only takes a very gentle touch to start. I am not aware of any other method of starting the sequence.

Yup, that's how mine does it as well. Unless you're really jabbing it, it has plenty of time to settle down before the shots start.

Thanks to Cwilson341 and Steve Perry for your replies.

I did notice the pause before starting, but I was always taught that just pushing the shutter release to initiate a 5-second self-timer was iffy, and a cable release was the only sure way to go. I guess I'll cope by setting the initial focus point a bit in front of the subject, so the first couple of exposures can be thrown out. C'est la vie!

Sam, I think the very light touch required to activate the start of this process is the difference. I think there is much less impact than pressing the shutter release. My touch screen is very sensitive. I absolutely love this option on the D850!

Well, I sure hope you're right. This option is the reason I upgraded.
