I took out my D7100 to take some photos of our grandchildren on Halloween. Much to my surprise, the camera will not auto focus. I checked all the settings on the lens and camera and even tried a different lens. I did notice that it was not focusing properly last week when I was taking shots of girls field hockey. Short of resetting the camera to its default state, does anyone have any suggestions?
I just checked again and see that the AF button had been moved from its normal setting of "on". I don't know how to remove this thread. Sorry for not checking sooner.
Had the same thing happen with my 7100 last couple of weeks. Easy to mess up settings at times.
Like computers... when in doubt, reboot. Remove the batteries for 24+ hours and it will then awaken fresh and ask what day and time it is and hopefully the autofocus will work.
Yup!! I've done that too. DUH!!

I wouldn't remove this thread. If someone else has the same problem, he might see your solution.

Yet another example of why folks need to relax, rethink, and play with all the options. Too bad you didn't do this between the field hockey game and the grandchildren on Halloween.
The night before I shoot I do a though check of my camera's operating systems. And in the winter in Florida I shoot every day.
SO, LESSON LEARNED?
It happens to me all the time with my Oly OM-D E-M1 MKII Zuiko lenses. There is a collar on the lens that push-pulls from Auto to Manual. It seems every time I pull it out of my bag, it manages to switch to manual. I usually don’t recognize it until I try to focus. I do a lot of underwater photography with that system, and if I don’t check before I jump in the water, it is a wasted dive. I may as well just carry an anchor around with me. So pre-dive checklist: fresh battery in camera and strobes, ample space in SD card, lens cap off, lens set to auto focus, check for housing leak. After all that, something will still likely go wrong with a setting I can’t change underwater. Oh yes, did I mention that I still have to check my scuba gear for proper functioning.

Yes, stuff happens, you lost a few shots (always sucks), you fixed it yourself for free! (that is always good), all better - life is good, life goes on!! Relax and re-check settings and controls is always a good move!
Try resetting your camera to the original manufacturers settings. Good luck.
Been there. Done that. First thing I checked AF button.

I had a strange thing happen -- I somehow got a finger on the lens such that it prevented it from moving. So the camera motor couldn't focus the lens. I think I had gloves on and couldn't feel the camera trying to focus. Back to basics, duh, how to hold the camera. In this case reboot the nut behind the viewfinder.
Last week my daughter was shooting photos with her new D7500. At first she couldn't get the popup flash to work. I tried to figure that out. Nothing. Then it wouldn't autofocus. I told her to take the lens off and put it back on. Voila. Problems corrected.

I think we have all done that
