Nest gimbal head. MTShooter, a regular, trusted member heresells them at his shop (Carter’s Camera Cottage) in Billings, Mt. Excellent quality and won’t break the bank. I’ve had or a few years and shoot with a Tamron 150-600 mounted on either a Nikon D7200 or D500. Carter sells online.

This Nest combo from Carter's is what I got. Love it. Added a ball head to complete the set and love the quality of the Nest products. Carter is great to work with, too.

I believe these are made in China .....

And we all know buying from China supports their suppressive Communistic Government.

Thank you so much for posting the link to the video on using a gimbal with a monopod. I was wondering how to use a gimbal with an slr.

Check out the Lens Master gimbal head on line. It’s around $200. Supports my Nikon 200-500 well. Takes about a week to arrive from the UK.

I really like the looks of your lens support, front, is it adjustable or only built for that lens? I shoot with a jobu gimbal and a video head, Manfrotto 504HD, and have been looking for a more stable set up. I don't like the ones with those little black wheels as I have seen what they can do to a lens. I will be buying an Arca-Swiss plate very soon.

I made it in a machine shop. The lens support is made of a hard polyurethane. I measured the diameter of the lens barrel with dial calipers and programmed a C.N.C milling machine to machine the radius. I machined slots so there is some vertical adjustment. I made the base from 6061 aluminum. Really Right Stuff has an engineering drawing on their website for their Arca-Swiss dovetail design. I used a dovetail cutter and machined it to their specifications.

Sorry for the delay, been gone most of the day. I've seen the rubber come off and have seen people use metal bearings and I'm talking about the added supports on long lenses. I've also seen some ware on the area, white paint, where the lens rests or rides on the support bearings . I did see a setup today that was homemade to support a lens by "CO". I am working on building some kind of "contraption" that lets me control my video head without using the long handle as it interferes with my body when doing BIF. Right now I am looking to buy an Arca-Swiss Rail to modify.

Seems like a minor consideration .....in order to work properly, and support some of the weight - there would inevitably be some marking.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm now using a video head but without the handle and want to be able to support a 600mm f/4.0 with a 1.4 at times and control this but not by moving it by holding onto the camera. I do use a cable release to trip the shutter. I will need to attach a small handle to the rail or shorten the handle that came with the 504 head. Thanks again.

Your right and I sometimes wonder just how much steadier your camera really is with that added support. I'll never know unless I try it myself, if I don't see an improvement I can always take it off.

RRS claims a "15% improvement" - AND, it make sense to me !

Agree. I place my Nikon D850 plus Nikkor 70-200 FL on the Nest Gimbal from MTShooter. I never looked back.
