Sunday I headed out in my kayak to Masonboro Island, an uninhabited 8-mile-long barrier island off of Wilmington NC...which was where the eye of Hurricane Florence first crossed the coast line. Not another person on the island that day.
It was obvious that the angry sea had sculpted major changes (though not remotely close to what Michael did to Mexico Beach FL.) There was major dune damage and lots of missing vegetation. The beachgrass was badly depleted and I found only one sick yucca where there should have been several. No stalks with beautiful white flowers that you normally see in fall.
One plus was that there were lots of interesting shells. I have been collecting knobbed whelk (sea snail) shells out there since 2004, but the pickings have been mighty slim for the past 4-5 years. I found four keepers that I hauled back home.
Saw one horseshoe crab (this is the time to find them washed up when they molt), but it had no tail so was not collectible.
Nothing earth shattering, but different still...and sad.

Hi, Sylvia - We thought we might send one of our hurricanes (Michael) your way but it turned south and hit Portugal weakly. Thanks for your kind comment.

Very beautiful, Dave!
Glad you liked them. I see you are not too far from my I-295 route going back and forth from NOVA to Wilmington.

About 20 miles east, Dave on a beautiful little tidal river, and you are welcome to stop by when you have a little time to spare, and we just purchased two little twelve-foot kayaks which haven"t even been in the water yet.
Thanks for your kind comment, Jim.
