Check the Trash.

You can move "in progress" file to the trash can, but then you can't empty trash because you get an in-use error, even after resetting finder

If you haven't already done so, try checking the internal 250GB drive with Disk Utility. I hope you resolve this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but the issue still exists.

Recently I have tried using My Passport (on a WD 4TB drive with over 3TB free, my Mac only has 250GB total disk space) to perform a backup of my Macbook Pro which is running Mojave 10.14. I have run backups successfully up and till recently. Lately, the backup runs and then fails at the end with a message to try again and then run Disk Utility if that doesn't work. I ran the Disk Utility repair option and the WD drive checked out ok.

Well, after confirming the definition of insanity by doing the same thing 3-5 times with no successful back up I'm open to suggestions as to what to do. I was able to successfully copying some individual files to the WD drive but rather have the comfort of a full back up.

Is the WD drive toast? Should I try something else like repartitioning or reformatting the drive (don't even know if this is an option)? Open to any suggestions from the Mac users.

I am working with Apple Support. I have backups on 2 different drives, so I worked with them to reformat one drive and all was going well. I was speeding through a new backup and it failed again with 5 min left. Used disk utility on main and USB disk and no problem was found. Sent Apple a copy of system logs and they will call me at 3:30 MDT today. Will post what they said. I have seen this problem posted on several online forums, but no solution yet.

That kind of stuff is SO frustrating. I hope it works out, and appreciate your sharing details.

Here is an update to my post. I took my WD drive to my son's house and was able to back up his Mac using my drive so I think I've narrowed the problem down to my Macbbook Pro. I think Chops diagnosis of the problem may be spot on but I'm going to see how you make out with Apple. Thanks for the updates.

Apple still looking at the problem. Sent them all kinds of infomation for analysis. Their engineers are looking at it and will get back to me. I suggest you call Apple support and let them look at your data to see if it is a common problem. They are easy to work with. I hope to post a resolution soon.

Bill, I just did some research on my own and found a fix that seems to work. If you have APP Cleaner and uninstaller on your MAC this might be your problem. I followed the instructions and it seemed to fix my backups. Two have run and completed. I am including the link. Another choice would be to wait for version 6.2 to be released on the Apple store. Let me know if this fixes your problem.
