Does anyone know if a 2x or 1.5x extender is supposed to work on above Telephoto lens? I wanted to give my 100x400 lens more magnification and tried Canon's 2x and 1.4x extenders. Doesn't want to work on AF. Even in bright sunlight... What is the alternative? I'm using a Canon 5D mk 3.

I have a 1.4 extender, and with it that lens only works in manual. But it DOES work.
Not sure if it helps, but I use a 1.4x with the 300 mm L prime lens and the auto works great. As well it works wonders with the 70-200.
I have a Tamron 200-500mm lens. It auto focuses very well, it does not have IS. The lens is a bit heavy and needs to be on a tripod, or monopod. I can hand hold the lens, but only at high shutter speeds. I may be interested in a 2x for some really extra reach, so I'm going to watch this thread and see if come up.

I too have a 5D Mk 3. the EF 2 X 11 Extender works great with my Canon EF 400 L prime. But always use manual focus, always!!! And a heavy duty tripod for sure! Dave

You can use pin-taping to trick the camera into autofocusing. Canon obviously does not condone this and AF is very slow. I've used this trick and it does work without damage to lens or camera.

All you have to do is read the manual that comes with the converters. The answer is yes.

1.4 and manual is all my 100-400 ever worked with to any satisfaction.

No Canon TC will work in AF with this lens. See:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/charts/canon1_4xExtender.htmlI do use a Tamron 1.4X and AF will work on a bright day. I don't know of any 2X that will give you AF with this lens.

There was an article sometime back about putting a piece of tape over the three electric points on the right side of the 100-400 then the auto focus would work with the extender. If I can find it I will post it or maybe someone else will post it. Bee

It's determined by the max f-stop on the lens and for the lens you refer to you can't get AF beyond f5.6 because a 1.4X makes it 7.8. If you look at the B&H chart you will notice that no lens beyond f4 works with AF with Canon's extenders.

You will be OK as long as you are photographing a still subject.
Flowers, an old barn, scenics, portraits, etc., yeah that's just fine because those things are not suddenly going to jump up and fly off on you.
Try using MF on small fast BIF shots. That's a different story.
Don't know what Hermy intends to mostly shoot because he didn't say, but subject matter is a consideration.

I understand what the manufactures say, but on a good bright day you tell my lens that.
