LR Classic -Export to Hard Drive question.

In LR Classic I exported 50 pics to my HD with the "Burn to full sized .jpegs" option. All of the pics were the same 15MB each in LR. After export, the MB sizes decreased to about half. What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to upload to Snapfish to create an album that will be at the best resolution.

What file type were they as imported into LR? And what were your export settings?

Imported into LR as .jpegs, Hit EXPORT BUTTON then settings = Export to = Hard Drive, (specific folder on desktop, resolution=240 ppi, no sharpening, no resize to fit, but they all appear in the folder as half the original MB size.....Thanks.

The post linked below was created to help members understand the 'export' process of Lightroom and similar software to create high-resolution image files for online presentation. It won't answer the specifics of your issue with the changing size of the files. But hopefully, it will refocus your investigation onto the technical issues that relate specifically to the types of files your post references.

Regarding using Snapfish for physical printing, the only adjustments would be to leave the files at 100% quality and do not enforce any limits on the files sizes for pixels nor for disk size. Look also at the output sharpening settings where the settings for matte and glossy paper have a tangible impact on the resulting files and the resulting prints.

In the eport dialogue, Quality should be 100% and Limit file size should be unchecked - see below:

Did you do any cropping? Any colour changes? I've actually had this happen to me and it was a curiosity - and an annoyance. I kept working on it. In my case, it appeared that making ANY limitations (like the PP 240 you mentioned) affected the size of the output file. One thing I think I would try is importing the original into your PS program, do the same work as you did in LR, then do a "save as" and see what you come up with.

Just realised you chose the Burn to full sized jpegs option. This option is for writing to CD/DVD, not for Snapfish.

Export Location:
Export to Hard Drive
Export to Specific Folder
Folder (name and address of folder)

None of the presets on the left hand panel of the dialogue should be selected.

More information would be helpful. What was the file format of the original files? Were they RAW or TIF? When you export an uncompressed file to a JPG, the resulting JPG will, of course, be compressed.

All files were jpegs from the start then imported into LR Classic. On export when I export to HD the presets all become blanked out as default.

The available options in the LR export dialog window is determined by the file type selection. If you select jpeg you get one set of choices, tiff another set. My workflow is as follows; RAW into LR, export as a tiff file, tiff into PSE (don't laugh, 90% of what you have to do editing wise can be done easier and faster with PSE as compared to PS) and then save as jpeg max quality (or less as required). I personally don't see much point in editing jpegs in LR, might as well open them in PSE.

First, if you are concerned about file size, why are you shooting in .jpg? If you shoot in RAW, you will have a larger file to start with, and then after editing, convert to .jpg if that is what you want as the end product.

Second, you are adding an extra step by importing to your HD first. Why not import directly to your LR Catalog, which automatically also puts them into your HD folders?

Starting with a large file such as RAW will make it possible to end up with more resolution [information] in the final image regardless of format. Remember that all editing done in LR is non-destructive, so starting with RAW means you can edit all you want and then re-set to the original. [Of course if you work on a virtual copy, you will still have the original for future new versions!].

First I am working with jpeg because these are all older pics I have accumulated over 60 years or someone else had taken them. Second, I am importing them into LR Classic , then I edit them, in PS. When they are back in LR naturally the file size becomes larger after edits (15M). Then I export the 15 M files from LR to a folder on my HD to send to the book maker. The files sizes (after the export) became half of what they were in LR (ie. 8M instead of 15M in that folder. My question is why?
Hope this is a bit more clear.
Thanks for any help...

This brings me back to what compression rate are you exporting at? (should be 100% to get the best out of the jpegs) - see my post above https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-556653-1.html#9455014
