Hi folks,

Am going on a cruise from/back to Miami the end of this month which will dock in these three ports for a day each. Arrive early morning and leave around sundown, so night life there is out, but I am wondering what daytime photo opportunities those of you who have been to these ports would recommend.

Thank you!

Tom

I've been to St. Maarten and Puerto Rico and there are photo opps every time you turn around. St. Maarten, look for Front Street. All kinds of little shops etc. Puerto Rico, check out El Morro Fort in Old San Juan. Lots of stuff in Old San Juan to shoot. Enjoy the cruise. You'll have a ball.

I have not been to St. Martens but I have been in a cruise that visited San Juan and Nassau. While in San Juan the old cemetery near Castillo de San Felipe and the fortress itself offer many opportunities for good photography. I am sure you know in the Caribbean it is usually hot and humid and the sunlight is strong. In early morning light photography is better or late in the evening. There is a free shuttle to the fortress. The cemetery is a very interesting place and you should not miss it. Old San Juan is good enough to spend the day there. There is another fortress near by called Castillo de San Cristobal. Beautiful beaches in the Condado area, locals will help you find them. Outside San Juan lots of opportunities but your time there could be limited.
Nassau also offers many opportunities. I just walk around the city and snap at what I see and I like. I am sure the ship will give you all the information you need and perhaps others here will be more useful than I am.
Have a nice cruise.

Thank you! Yes, the problem will certainly be that there will not be enough time. I appreciate your recommendations!

Have been to all of them, Tom. I never sign up for any tours. What I always do is to go to the cab stand in port and ask the drivers what they would charge for a 1/2 day tour and that while I want to see all the tourist sites, I also want to see things of interest they think I should see that are not included in the regular tours. I have never been disappointed in the results and have generally paid less that the boat tours would have charged.

Have a GREAT time!!

A very good suggestion! I learned long ago in New Orleans to ask the hotel doorman where HE would eat and found the best Cajun food anywhere! Thanks for this idea!

I lived in San Juan in the 1970s and agree with those who suggest the forts El Morro and San Cristobal. Old San Juan is very interesting itself with many street photo opportunities. The step streets are unique. If time permits a visit to the El Yunque Rain Forest will offer good photo opportunities.

Mac, I truly appreciate your input. In order to see as much as possible, I am thinking I will tabulate the suggestions and those places receiving the most recommendations will likely be at the top of the list. Thanks!

In San Juan, check out the Calle del Cristo and the cathedral. The Hotel El Convento near the cathedral is also worth a look. At one end of the Calle del Cristo there is an interesting chapel, and if you like birds, there's a park nearby with lots of pigeons. Not too far from there is the Fortaleza, the governor's residence. Suggest you google these sites to see if they interest you.

If you're in San Juan, take the Rain Forest tour, interesting. In St Maartens, try the beach at the approach end of the airport runway
