How I shoot Volleyball.

I'm shooting a lot of high school volleyball(daughter plays on this team) this year again and
wanted to share some results and how I'm getting these shots. I have some parents who are paying me this year to get some good
shots of their seniors so I must be doing something right. These are low res versions
I email out and hour after the game just for social media purposes and quick downloading, usually picking the 50 best to send.
I have the high res available for anyone wanting a nice print at the end of the season which I edit
a lot more carefully for a quality 8.5 x 11 print, or
for the banquet slideshow. I'm shooting a D7200 with a Nikon 85mm F1.8. Usually shooting
at 1.8 and a shutter speed at 1/800 and auto iso. ISO usually is around the 1250 range.
I have recently been shooting in jpeg large to get a slightly faster frame rate which does help.
I can edit them faster as they typically need a little cropping. I move all around the court typically,
sit on the floor for libero shots, a couple rows up in the stands for kills at the net, and straight across
for some bench reactions. I try to shoot under and through the net to have a better shot
at getting faces in the shot and better expressions - those ones are tough!
I have found it's crucial to keep shooting after the point is made, catching
the energy of the coach, bench and players round out the entire feeling of being there! Enjoy!

Really nice shots - shows the action, intensity, and sportsmanship very well, with good perspective, close-ups, and action.

Skylark I really like your shots. I just ordered a 85mm 1.8G lens for this purpose to shoot volleyball and basketball. To go along with my 70-200 2.8 24-70 2.8 and 50mm for under the basket. How fast and how accurate is this lens?
Thanks, Jules

The focus is plenty fast for sports, I shoot it almost exclusively now for volleyball. I will be borrowing a 70-200 2.8 this weekend to try
some shots from higher up. The focus is fast - my keeper rate is great, if a photo is out of focus it's never the lenses
fault! Knowing the game and anticipating the players is the key to volleyball, if a player you want to shoot is always being blocked
by another player you just gotta move. I typically pick a player and follow them and not try to follow the ball.

Good advice and thank you. Next week I should have the lens, at which time I will shoot a game or two.
