In my working life as a mechanic, I worked for a guy in Earthmoving & Transport. He had numerous Cat loaders leased to Fertiliser companies around our Agricultural region.
It was a very corrosive work environment resulting in harsh rusting of the machines.
Every few years we pulled them out of service for sand blasting & repaint.
These pics indicate the level of attention they got. A big strip down, sand blast each item, repair any panels in need, then repaint with 'Two Pack' paint.
It was fairly time consuming, but the loader came out in great condition.
Most of his installations were brand new loaders, & we did all this rust protection before going to work. This resulted in a not so affected machine coming out at leases end of term. Working in a soft impact environment & with low hours of work on the clock, the refurbish was much less & almost a like new machine to add to his own fleet.
This sort of work kept us busy, but the outcomes were satisfying. This was an old machine from other industry.

It tires me to think about the things I've done over the years. Little wonder my aches & pains now.
Awesome pix of the process! You know, with all the shows about "frame up" car restorations, I'm surprised no one has come up with a show about restoring the heavyweight vehicles; the real movers and shakers.

Great series, it certainly brings meaning to the saying "an ounce of prevention....

Interesting post. I spent part of my career doing in-service engineering support of depot level maintenance on Navy aircraft. It was the same type of process, but we didn't take them completely apart, only to the level necessary to perform a deep structural inspection.
