I looked at the Tamron 18-270 and tried it out for a weekend. It has a cheap feel to it but the images were pretty good. I then tried the Nikon 28-300mm VR II (full frame FX lens, NOT DX) and the image difference was amazing, and the Nikon has a profession feel to the build, I was glad to pay the extra $400 for the Nikon and have no regrets. Nikons 28-300mm lens is now my standard lens on my D800E and almost never gets taken off unless I am shooting a bigger lens at that moment. I used it extensively on my D7000's before getting my D800E and loved it on the crop body too.

I've had my Tamron 18 ~ 270 for several years and I find it the most versatile lens I own, and I own several Canon L Series lenses.

I'm not a pro, but a good friend of mine is, and one day we decided to shoot images side by side and compare. We could not tell any difference between the two. Perhaps someone else could, but we couldn't

Attached are several images taken with my 18 ~ 270. I cannot attest to how it compares to Nikon because I own a Canon, but I highly recommend it to anyone

Great shots ...I have the tamron 24-75mm and love it..I'm still holding off on the 18-270mm until I can compare a few more notes ..Bmazz you're input is wonderful because you gave me examples to compare..I'm also considering MT shooter s response because he liked the Nikon one better...it's so hard to choose ..I recently purchased the Nikon 24-120mm from adorama as a used one with an E+ rating..when it arrives next week I want to compare it to my tamron to see if I can see a difference..right now tamron has a rebate of 100 dollars..which makes my budget a bit more affordable to have both lenses as opposed to just the nikon 28-300mm
So many choices so little money lol.

Just a quick note, the Nikon 24-120mm was made in 3 incarnations. The original non-VR version was a disaster. The first AF-S VR version (f3.5-5.6) was not too bad, but suffered a lot of fall-off in the corners and tended to search for focus a lot because of it. The current AF-S VR II version (f4-5.6) is very good in all respects. If this is the version you are getting you will be very pleased with it. The second version is the lens I used to have that I sold to upgrade to the 28-300mm Nikon lens, I had used it for over 3 years. It wasn't until I bought my first Nikon D7000 that I realized its shortcomings. It was just fine on my D1X and D90 though.
The better your cameras sensor, the better your lenses need to be!

I think the one I'm getting is the second version..it only cost me 260 dollars and I can live with the few minor flaws since it wasn't nearly as expensive as the original price...i am now tossing between your Nikon 28-300mm and the 18-270 tamron. I have until the end of September when that tamron rebate expires ..hopefully I can get up a bit more cash if I do sway over to the Nikon...thank you all for the inputs..I take every one seriously because I have found that everyone here is very good at helping out...

That was a good buy, I sold mine in January for $425.
I see you are in New York. If its possible to get to one of your many camera stores there I would suggest handling both the Nikon and Tamron lenses for yourself, it will help with your decision I am sure.

I was in adorama and tried out the tamron. Right now I'm in Florida so I ordered the smaller Nikon to use and compare with the tamron I already have...I trust adorama and if I need to when I get back up to ny I plan on selling all the kit lenses I have to offset this newer purchase..if this second generation Nikon lens isn't so great I will sell that back too..in the meantime I will see if I can muster up that 900 bucks if I do end up wanting the Nikon 28-300 mm that you have..

I have had this lens for a year now and love it. It is the best walk around lens I have. I did not find the lens cheap. It is made of plastic but it has held up from a couple of falls I have taken without a problem.. check the warranty.

Have the Tamron 18-270mm and it seldom leaves my camera. I had the Nikon 18-200 and sold it after I tried the Tamron. The lens that MT is talking about is suppose to be an excellent lens also and you're basically cutting off the wide angle end and adding to the far telephoto. I would look to Tamron or Sigma if buying another lens. I guess these old eyes can't see that extra $400 of sharpness---not when I can almost buy another lens with that money. I shoot alot of sports so I'll show some action shots and I also enjoy florals so I'll throw in a couple of those shot with the Tamron........

Here's my two cents worth. I have the Nikor 18mm-200mm lens. I like it a whole lot and have had good luck with it on my D90. Because I don't want my girlfriend messing with my lens, I purchased the Tamron 18mm-270mm lens for her. She loves it and I have to admit for the money I feel the Tamron might be a better deal. The Tamron has won photgraphic awards.

I too have had the 18-270 for several years. It hangs on my 7d much of the time and I am very pleased with It's performance. Read my topic "followup to Oops...." for my experience with the Tamron people.

so far more are for the tamron than against..since i no longer do any pro work i just may opt for that lens..i can still keep the nikon 24-120mm thats on its way since i didn't spend all that much on it..but with that rebate that tamron is offering and the focal lenght is just what i am looking for i can scrounge up the 500 bucks that the tamron will cost in the end and have 2 lenses for the price of the more expensive nikon 28-300mm..yes i would love to have all the best ones out there but if the naked eye cant seem to notice the difference then it sounds good to me to get the tamron..by the way those shots that everyone posted are awesome..most of what i love to shoot is urban and photojournalistic style..so the 3 camera bodies that i have already i can use the nikon the tamron and also one of the nikon primes that i have..without having to switch lenses..i want to sell the kit lenses that are probably worse than the 28-120mm that im waiting on...
thanks everyone again for all the great advice and responses...they've been such a big help
