I suspect that uploads to my laptop computer will be too slow to be of any use, but I don't know. I'm very serious about buying a Nex-7 and have read that it's "Eye Fi compatible". I'm not sure what that really means.

I have looked into this in the past, and I keep hoping to see bigger news. So far, if I were to do this, I'd probably go tethered with a long cable. You can chain 2 or 3 usb cables together with "repeaters" at each; I've seen people that had a tethered setup that was 20 to 30 feet from their computer.
Typically, this type of setup would be in the studio, but it can be done on location (and even at a sporting event).
There is an Eye Fi card that will transmit raw files, if I remember right. My biggest frustration is that they're SD cards currently, and I use CF. If my camera used SD, I would be giving the Eye Fi cards much more consideration.
I use Eye-Fi religiously for astrophotography. I set up my telescope in my back yard, connect my DSLR and start shooting. I also keep my laptop with me because there is a lot of value in seeing the image immediately after exposing without disconnecting the DSLR from the telescope (causes the need to refocus). As soon as the camera is done with the exposure, it auto uploads the image to the folder of your choice. I cannot shoot without it now. However, I only shoot 16.2MP and space is often an issue, especially if I choose to switch to video mode for a minute or two. With you shooting at 24MP, the only answer is to have multiple Eye-Fi cards. Hopefully they will develop them in CF format for you soon.

The specs for the Nex-7 state the memory options are:
Memory Stick Pro Duo
SD/SDHC/SDXC
Eye Fi might be an option.
I have an eye-fi mem stick and tried it on my Fuji HS20 and my Pentax Kr. It works fine but I quit using it because it is slow. If they could speed it up somehow I might be interested.

Ah ha! That's what I suspected. Thank you John339.
There're CF/SD adapters on the market. I was looking into it to see if I could use a tablet as an external viewer. I'm also curios on how long does it take to transmit an image. Does anybody know?
I used it to transfer images to my computer and it is maybe twice as slow as USB2.
I also used it to transfer images to my ipad1 and it is just too slow for me.
A couple of images would be fine but I usually transfer 100 or so sometimes lots more and it is just too slow.
