No, I didn't take a trip to the Southwest...

Eastern prickly pear cactus is native here, but seeing it in bloom is not very common. This year with the hot dry weather the blooms were like I have never seen before - whole fields of big spectacular blossoms.

The "double download" will get you a closer look. Check out how transparent the petals are.

Absolutely outstanding. You have everything just right. The colors and focus are excellent with the transparency of the petals showing between the veins in the petals. Those flowers are so delicate. Cactus flowers are some of the most difficult to photograph. Mainly because of the transparency of the petals. I winter in AZ and have tried and tried to get a photo like yours. I came close last season on a white cactus flower. The purple flowers are almost impossible. So beautiful in real life but, very difficult to capture. Keep up the great work, have fun, and have a GREAT DAY!

Thanks very much for your kind comments, Jeffrey. You are describing the challenges photographing these plants accurately and you recognize exactly what I was trying to do. Very gratifying. Thanks again. I had a lot of trouble with these until I started experimenting with diffusors and reflectors.
