https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/canon-eos-r-officially-announced-claims-to-have-worlds-fastest-autofocus-system/

Canon PROS:
– World’s fastest autofocus
– Full compatibility with existing EF lenses
– A cool adapter with drop-in filter (see this cool video by Caleb Pike)
– The new EOS-R lenses are focus by wire and have an extra customizable ring
– The new EOS-R lenses are stunning (50mm f/1.2 and 28-70mm f/2.0)
– It has 10 bit 4:2:2 output just like the Nikon Z
–$2299* for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $3399*.(actually more expensive than similar competitors)

Canon CONS:
– lack of IBIS
– single slot card
– Low battery life: 350 shots
– The EOS R does have eye-AF but only S-AF. (info via Jordan Drake)
– It uses the same “Old” 30MP sensor from the 5D IV (with more phase detection pixels added)
– The cool lenses are expensive: RF 50mm f/1.2L at $2,299, the RF 28-70mm f/2L at $2,999
– Roadmap doesn’t disclose what lenses we can expect
– The dial on the left is just an ON-OFF button
– Canon will not be opening up the RF mount specs to third parties (info via Jordan Drake)
– No AF-C in continuous high drive (slower FPS compared to Sony cameras)
– Still a huge ass crop in 4K recording (1.6 crop). Looks the same as 5D IV. Heavy rolling shutter as well. (info via Jordan Drake)
– 1080p does 60fps and not 120fps
– no compatibility with their EOS-M lenses

What do you Canon folks think about this? What do you Nikon and Sony folks think ? Is anyone excited to buy this, or will you stay with your present brand and cameras?

One huge positive is apparently all ef and efs lenses are 100% compatible so your old 1988 lenses work just fine and with the control adapter you get the new R features on your ed lenses like shutter and iso control.
That is really cool.
Also DPAF is fully operational in all video modes which gives the R cameras incredible af functions in shooting video. And finally once independent lens adapters come out all FD, FL and original R lenses will be usable with no glass in the adapter.
Pretty exciting all around.
Canon it appears is hitting it out of the ballpark again like they did with the EOS system 30 years ago.

Architect1776, does it bother you any that Canon still has to do a 1.6X crop for 4k, negating wide angle lens views ? Does any of the following bother you: the limited EYE-AF (single frame only), No AF-C in continuous drive mode, No IBIS, No 120fps in 1080p, low battery life, single card slot, same "OLD" sensor from 5dMIV with less dynamic range than competitors ? In your opinion will Canon folks just ignore all this?

How much does Sony pay you for free advertising, competitor bashing?

Just follow the facts. Others reviewers online have already chimed in. Some have praised some of this camera's features which is very fair. But they have already highlighted some dissapointing facts that makes this release less than the Nikon Z-cameras and Sony cameras. Be objective enough and see this camera on its merits. More real-world testing will come and we all will have a more complete picture. I will be the first to post any future glowing reviews here in this thread. Folks I was an avid pro Nikon and Canon user for 40 years, yes 40. I love both Nikon and Canon brands and want them to knock it out of the park with their fullframe mirrorless cameras. That is the best situation for the industry if they all are successful and pushing each other to continue to innovate and give us great gear. Cheers

Canon and Nikon finally getting serious about mirrorless. Jumping ship to Sony. Photography is now about digital except for this Dino’s that still want to shoot silver halites (so?) for fun. Sony is an electronics company that makes some outstanding equipment. I don’t want to wait for Nikon to go through 4-5 generations to catch up.

Don't forget we have more fullframe mirrorless cameras coming this month from Panasonic and Zeiss. Stay tuned.

I think Canon will hold their base with this, but not attract brand jumpers. On the other hand, Canon's base is very big, so that may be all they need to do with their first FF mirrorless. Also, Canon did not over-hype to the extent Nikon did, so they "may" not face as big a negative reaction. On the other hand reviewers who bashed Nikon may feel compelled to bash Canon.

It is funny that all these Canon users bashed Nikon for only one card slot and low battery life and not for Canon doing the same. Funny how that works.

There is ibis for video.
For other purposes not really a bother at all.
Not the same old sensor.
But even the same old sensor blows away the Nikon Z models that struggle to focus 50% of the time and from user reports nearly fail in low light.
Also being able to use all legacy ev lenses without loss of features and even have the new enhanced features is pretty remarkable.
Nikon has far more failures in the Z cameras that are needed in real world shooting. The crop doesn't bother me and it doesn't bother you as you were not going to get the R camera anyway.
The features Canon provided meet most all my needs. And this is the first iteration like the 650/620 EOS models that set Canon on the road to dominance
No this is a very good and solid camera no matter how hard you sour puss naysayers want to throw a wet rag on it to try and make the Z look better. The Z falls short.

Canon will keep its base at home with this but there isn’t anything compelling enough to cause other brand users to jump ship. To me it appears that Canon cobbled their entrée together mostly from “parts at hand” to at least get their foot in the door. With that thought in mind I can’t help but think this release is just a preview of coming attractions. Canon is too good a competitor to stay in a back bench role.
The following is posted to illustrate why I wouldn't consider switching. I’m puzzled by the lack of IBIS, the single card slot doesn't bother me personally but the “old technology” card does. Being old and slow I mostly shoot 'scenes' so the fastest AF in the universe doesn't do anything for me. What is there to get my attention then?

Canon EOS R First Impressions with Chris & Rishi

A good discussion by DPReview folks of the new Canon EOS 5.

Architect1776, you may like this very fair discussion of this camera's pros and cons. Cheers

Architect, What are those 'far more failures' that you say Nikon has and which Canon feature is better?
