Mac Photos Problems....

I have been using Mac's iPhoto and Photos for several years (for library and simple editing.... Affinity Photo for any photo editing more complex). After I installed High Sierra 10.3.6 (a year ago? - currently using 10.3.6) the problems seemed to start?... not positive to timing. Photos quits about every hour of use and have had two episodes where library has totally closed and needed reboot and "force quit" to get it operational. I have done Malware Bytes for virus elimination. It has become quite frustrating.... any advise greatly appreciated.... Thank you!
Pro photographers don't use Photo, let alone iPhoto. Get complete access to all your files in Raw by downloading your files into folders on your computer. Access them in Lightroom, Photoshop, or Elements from there to do Anything you want, not constrained by a program meant for an amateur.

Dr J...
Have you thought of bringing your OS up to date? High Sierra is now on version 10.13.6. If that was what you intended to type, ignore this. Otherwise, it might be worth doing the OS update. Also, have you updated Photos to any more current version? I show the most current version is Version 3.0 (3291.13.210).
If you've already done all of this, hope you get better help elsewhere. Good luck.
I am running Safari Version 11.1.2 (13605.3.8), High Sierra 10.13.6. Since my latest OS update, it also updated my Photos. Sounds like you may have interference with your anti-virus app. I am also using Affinity Photo and have never had any problems with Photos or Affinity. I did have a problem when I used an anti-virus app, but when I got rid of the app, all was good. Make sure you run the disc utility also. If this still is a problem, than you have some bad JuJu on your machine.

To all: THANK YOU for your replies. The printing, even on my large screen Mac so small.... yes, I am running 10.13.6 not 10.3.6 (missed the 1)... and the current version of Safari (11.1.2) and of Photos...3). I will get rid of any antivirus apps. As I mentioned, I have Affinity Photo (really like it) for "post" and have used iPhoto and now Photos as my library. To Fotoartist: I am not a pro and started with iPhoto and then Photos because it was user friendly for both phone and computers (not that computer savvy - better at jaw surgery :-)). Thanks again to all!

What??? Who cares what"the pro's" use. He didn't infer that he was one. If you have some advise just pass it along.
I’m sorry to read that! I have a MacBook Pro, and my main problem was running out of RAM. Is there any chance you have too many things open? Do you have a backup drive? It might be worthwhile to take it in to a specialist to see if he/she can figure out what’s going on. Just make sure you back up all your photos!
I find myself liking Photo, but I’ll admit that I did switch to Lightroom. The thing about Photo is it’s easy to use, and it works well with Mail when I want to send something to a friend or in a message on my iPhone. Yes, I’m one of those people who has a lot of Apple products! I honestly don’t think Photo is your problem. There’s something else going on; have it looked at. You don’t have to go to Apple, just find someone who specializes in their computers.
I’ll be looking forward to finding out what’s going on. Good luck!

I've been using Photos on 10.13.6 as my filing system and for simple touch-ups since High Sierra came out. I have never had your problem but I also didn't add any external virus protection (it's not needed) as you did which sounds like a possible cause. My chief objection to High Sierra, is that it no longer "connects" Photos to Photoshop Elements as the old version did. I used to be able to click and drag a photo from Photos down to the Elements icon at the bottom toolbar whereupon Elements would open with the selected photo loaded. Can't do that anymore.

Applecare is always willing to help even if you do not have the contract. They can help rebuild your library, which sometimes becomes corrupted. This could be your issue. They did for me and it has been fine ever since. The Genius Bar will do it as well for NC at your local Apple Store.

Not to beat a dead horse, you are aware of right (cmd) click the photo, select edit with, and find PSE on the hdd or desktop, right? Like I said somewhere else, it's a bit of a PIA but easier than exporting, processing, and importing back to Photos.
Call Apple support. That’s my suggestion and what I do whenever I have an issue like this.

Macs are not prone to virus infection like PCs. In fact it could be doing more harm than good running virus software, sometimes that software can mis-identify a useful executable. Even if not, it is a waste of your time to run it.
FYI I have not had any problems with High Sierra and Photos. I don't think it is a systemic issue. Perhaps a trip to the Apple store might be in order.

FYI
Malwarebytes is recommended by Apple Tech Support and I did have some malware infection on my MBP.

Try upgrading to the most recent OS rather than investing in "pro" software. It'll just frustrate you if you are acquainted with Photo, etc. Good luck!
