LARRYR. Loc: Saint Martinville, La.

Hi there, my name is Larry, and I have written a few
fourms here on UHH. Most of my responses were on
political views and the way I felt our country is heading
in the wrong direction.
Today how ever I have a different topic I would like the
viewers of UHH to stop and think about. PLease let me
say that as a Viet Nam Vet. I want to thank all of our
men and women serving in our military both now and
in the pass and future.
How I would like to tell you about an other group of
people that I believe are long over due to be thanked
for their unselfish service to our country. Last night my
son-in-law recieved a phone call from his stept-father
who lives in Atlana. My son-in-law is a police officer here
in Louisiana and his stept-brother is a police officer in
Atlana, where yesterday he was shot while on duty, by
a armed gunman holding his family hostage.
Now both my and son-in-law and his stept-brother
loved the freedom of gun ownership,so this has nothing
to do with gun control, this has to do with what type of
people would go and risk their lives each and every day
to a country that have very seldom give them any thanks
for all their services. These are men and women of the
law inforcement ,fire fighting dept, coastguards and any of
the others departments of men and women who bravely
awaken each and every day willing to risk their lives to a
country that takes so much for granted. These people who's
family have no idea wheater they will be seeing their love
one far the last time once they walk out door.
I believe it's far pass due that this great Nation that contribue
so much of time in thanking every one in Congress and ever
other groups of people for their services to our country
should be able to find a way to thank these men and women
for their great services. I know many will ask just who are these
people, open your eyes my friend, these people are your
friends, neighbors and love ones.

I have always tooted the horn of all policemen. One would have to watch COPS or some of those other shows similar
to it to know the dangers they are in constantly. Even though they have vests on, doesnt' mean they cannot be and are shot in the face, neck and elsewhere and die from that as well. There have been several of those shows which makes me cringe to know we have criminals like the ones I see still on the streets of this country... Lots are still roaming the streets too. They dont even have to carry a stolen gun with them, they can use a baseball bat to do damage to one's skull. I saw a man on tv... real film too.. he had a baseball bat in his hand, and walked across the street to another man who was leaning against the wall of this building.. and he whacked him over and over the head till he was dead or about dead. Such violence.. and to think that at one time of that man's life, he was an innocent baby. My my, how the worm has turned!! :-( :-(

You know, I have often wondered why those vest dont come down farther than just in their chest... cause if someone fires a shot and hits their carotid artery, they'd be dead in an instant. I watched this very small built policeman who had a police dog with him.. and he was trying to capture this black guy, but he had the upper hand really, cause he was bigger, thus knocking the policeman to the ground and grabbing his gun at the same time. The guy tried to fire his gun at him.. but it fortunately jammed.... so the dog tried to jump him, but he hit the dog in the head with the pistol, which made him run away.

The policeman was still on the ground so he reached for his hidden weapon when he saw that the guy may be able to unjam that gun and fire it... so the cop managed to fire it but missed, he then got up and ran after him... shooting at him at the same time. Then it was out of the camera range. Dont remember what happened after that.. but as you can see.. there are small policemen too.. and they are no match for big guys like this one was... Can't remember if the dog survived the head bashing or not.

Bullet proof vest are designed to come to within 2" of the top of the officers duty belt while standing. The reason for this is so it can be worn under the shirt, and when the officer sits down it does not ride up to far into his neck. Most vest worn by police officers are only capable of stopping handgun bullets, not high powered rifle bullets. A vest capable of stopping rifle bullets would be too heavy. Unfortunately there are many places for an officer to be shot that is not protected.

My heart and prayers go out to this officer and his family. Hopefully he will fully recover and be able to return to active duty.

above is the site for the national law enforcement memorial fund. It is in DC.

The one job I never wanted was that of a police officer. One sees the seamy side of life and receives little thanks.

as a former law enforcement officer, i thank you larry foryour kind and oh so true words. Was never a military veteran, the navy would not take me due to vision, but I tell people I served my country for 6 years as a cop. It can be a frustrating, dangerous, stressfull job, but there is also the fun, the positive impact on people, and the just plain bizzare stuff you run across that makes the job worthwile. My prayers go out for the wounded officer and his family and department family. What happended to the criminal?

In my church we have a detective for the Fort Pierce police department and the assistant pastor is now a road deputy with the Indian River County Sherrif Department. I pray daily that God keeps them safe.

Truly believe that as we have a federal holiday for military veterans who lost their lives for this country, there should be a federal holiday for public safety (police, fire, ems, corrections, parole and probation officers) that also lost their lives forthe USA.

I whole heartedly agre with you - and it is not just the officers who get shot - it is also the officers who get physicaly attacked & beaten - yes and many times killed with thier own guns when it is taken from them.

I personaly have saved one hwy patrolmans life - I came upon him fighting for his life on a mountain road miles from town and other people - the man had run his car off the road in effort to commit suicied and had landed in the river bed in a patch of willows - a big pillow - and was trying to get the officers gun -I learned as a young boy to win a fight you did not fight fair -
The second time was in the middle of town - I stopped at a grocery store and saw a hwy patrolman talking to a group of young men in a VW van at the gas station across the street - when I came out of the store minutes later I saw he was fighting 5 guys - well I handled 2 of them while he took care of the other 3 -this one would not have been fatal but surely would have been brutal. - Oh- I made a desicion before diveing into that fight - leave my pistol in the car - that cop would not have know if I was helping or a danger if I showed up with it in my hand.
Gun control is proper use of them.

class 3 holsters have made it much harder for others to get an officers weapon away from him'her. FYI the FBI has been developing biometeric technology that would record the officers info into the grip ofhis handgun. anyone other than the officer who attempts to fire the weapon , it will disable the handgun. It is probably decades away, but is interesting tech.
