I find LR doesn't download or otherwise now use the raw version of my photos on Nikons when I use the Raw + Jpg selection in the secondary card selection in the photo shooting section. XQD is primary card which according to the drill down should then have the NEFs. Have updated LR to the latest versions...still no go. If I use the XQD to upload, it still shows as a jpg in LR. ?

In Lightroom, Edit > Preferences > General Tab
About a third of the way down Import Options
Ensure the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" box is checked.

The jpegs and raws will sit side by side.

Since XQD is your primary card I assume you have a dual card body. Set it up so XQD gets the raw file and the other card gets the jpg. Then there's no jpg to download when you put the XQD card in.

Alternatively, stop shooting jpg. There's no need to do so. The jpg is in the raw file or you can easily export a jpg from the raw file in LR.

Don't set your second card for "RAW+JPEG". Set it for "JPEG". That's what I do on my D7000. Card #1 only has NEF's and card #2 only has JPEG's.

The other solution would be to stop shooting jpeg altogether. You don't need that file, as long as you have the raw file. If you want insurance, then shoot two raw files, one on each card. Once you have copied and verified that the file is fine, you can delete the extra one.

which LR version do you have? I have 5, and to import d850 into LR 5 I have to use adobe DNG converter. I move the raw files to a raw only file, run the dng converter, which I can direct it to put the new dng files where I really want them, and I can also rename them to what I want to at the same time. Will do this until I upgrade to LRCC next month
