Probably refers to a mirror lens.

Or, “A single-lens reflex camera (SLR) is a camera that typically uses a mirror and prism system (hence "reflex" from the mirror's reflection) that permits the photographer to view through the lens and see exactly what will be captured. ” (Wikipedia)

A mirror lens. Gets you a long fixed telephoto reach (commonly 500mm) in a short lens with lighter weight at a lower cost. Trade offs are a single f-stop (usually f/8 or f/6.3), softer focus, and weird donut-like out of focus highlights.

Nikon calls thier mirror lenses “Reflex” Nikkor.

I used to have one of the older models of this lens. Light weight for the focal length, but not the sharpest arrow in the quiver.
Didn’t matter that much, I used it for the newspaper and after they got done with printing it, no one would notice.

Most likely a mirror lens, like a telescope. But as pointed out the term "reflex" can refer to a camera with a mirror with one or two lenses; TLR, SLR. Where did you see it? With unknown words the context is often the key.

There's a pretty good key word in the title.

That is not what a "reflex lens" is... but it's a great description for a single lens reflex CAMERA.

Yes, "reflex" means "mirror" (whether camera or lens... or a telescope, for that matter).

In a lens the mirror "reflects" the image to "fold" the light path, allowing the lens to be much smaller and lighter than a non-reflex lens of the same focal length. (In a camera, a mirror "reflects" the image to redirect it up into a pentaprism and then another mirror redirects it toward the eyeport of the viewfinder.)

Also known as "catadioptric" lenses... but "reflex" or "mirror" is a lot easier to say, remember and type (and spell... I had to correct my own misspelling of it!)

It's the camera that's reflex, as others have explained. It's all done with mirrors. : )

Mirror lens, a takeoff on astronomical telescopes. Nikon made three focal length mirror lenses, 500, 1000 and 2000mm.
They were tricky and hard to use. I had the chance to borrow/use all three when I worked for the old Helix Rental in Chicago during the 1980s

I have tried mirror lenses and decided they are not for me inspite of the savings in cash and weight. My goal is great IQ and a mirror never satisfied.

And, then, there’s the reFLUX lens the doc uses for endoscopy.
