SanDisk portable backup

I just received this push on my computer about the SanDisk SSD External USB3.0 back up device. It is apparently very fast, comes in a lot of storage sizes, doesn't take up much room or weigh very much, and provides convenient backup, particularly when you're on the road with your camera & laptop. It's not particularly cheap but I imagine you can do better than the prices shown in the link.

I have nothing to do with the author or the sales of the device. Just thought I'd pass along the info since backup seems to come up often in our threads.

Yes, it is expensive for 1TB of storage, but it's in line with other SSD storage devices of that size.

The C drive in my main computer looks like this one.

Thank you for sharing. it is fascinating to see the SSD market to begin taking on the portable drive markets. For those so inclined, one can actually build up a similar device using an SSD and a portable enclosure; e.g. Samsung 860 EVO, 2TB SSD approximate cost between $390 to $450 and a Sabrent enclosure with a cost between $11 and $15. I just completed a build of a 4TB portable using a Samsung 860 EVO 4TB SSD coupled with a Rocketek enclosure. It will be my external storage in the future. For now, I am using it as a system boot disk---moved my laptop to this drive. In building out your own, you must take note of the maximum disk size the controller in the enclosure can support. My Sabrent enclosures could not handle anything about two, maybe three, terabytes whereas the Rocketek easily handled the 4TB and still provided UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) support.

Regardless of whether one buys or builds, SSD externally attached storage is still extremely expensive when compared to the spindle external drives by almost ten- to fifteen-fold. If speed is an issue, then SSD makes sense; otherwise, spindles will continue to be the most cost-effective.

TBerwick - I confess I fell in love with the idea and apparent useability of SanDisk’s rugged Extreme Portable SSD drive. I put my money where my mouth was and ordered one from B&H Photo. Then it arrived - with absolutely no documentation. I went online to SanDisk and found no formal user guide or documentation there either. There was a Q&A file with various random comments, none of which amounted to a user guide. Finally, after piecing together reviews from various vendor sites, I learned the compact SanDisk SSD drive cannot be connected to iOS devices such as an iPad or iPhone. The incompatibility with iPad makes it useless for me. Having obtained an RMA, I will be returning the drive to B&H in hopes of a full refund. Interesting technology, but not yet ready for Prime Time. Thanks to B&H for their, as always, excellent help - this fiasco was not their fault. — Ralph

It’s not the technology that’s not ready for prime time, it’s the vendor and/or the file system or you needed help in installing - should be no need for instructions - just treat it like any other new hard drive. I gave both my sons Samsung USB3 connected 512GB SSDs for Christmas. About the size of a pack of cigarettes - fits in your shirt pocket, 4-5 ounces, rugged, vibration resistant and probably waterproof. No instructions needed. Since it came partitioned and formatted correctly, it was simply plug and play on a Mac for one and a PC for the other - plugged it in and it showed up as a drive letter. Next time (if there is one), choose Intel or Samsung.

It's a portable SSD drive a repackaged version of the Western Digital 1 Tb I have, which is about the size of a box of Tic Tacs. Great for on the go storage, but you still need a computer of sorts to handle getting contents of an SD card onto it.

I think that it's more an issue of compatibility of iPhone and iPad with external devices. My understanding is that the smartphone and tablet need to have OTG (ON The Go) compatibility) in order to use external devices. The same holds true for the Android world.

Awesome drive. It would be nice if they would come down to about $100 per TB and I could get 5TB
