Video and story about a fire on board a Ryanair flight caused by a Li-ion back-up battery/charger.

Note 'Federal Aviation Administration figures show that, "air/airport incidents involving lithium batteries carried as cargo or baggage" happen, on average, once every 50 days.'

I recall reading that Li-ion batteries are supposed to be carried in hand luggage and not in checked bags. Apparently some airlines limit the number you can carry on. I know this subject comes up here every now and again, but I think it would be a good idea to check your airline's latest policy before packing your bags.

WHich is why the FAA does not allow Li Ion batteries in checked luggage. Which is an argument you can use if a Gate Agent demands that you check your camera case as luggage vs carryon.

Back in the early days of the motion picture, nitrocellulose was the film stock they used. It was very flammable. I know researchers are working on a replacement for the lithium battery. I hope they find something quickly. Maybe lithium batteries will be recommended as accessories for camping - good for starting fires.

And once again, people were taking their luggage with them as they evacuated.

I'd hate to be stuck behind someone struggling to get his suitcase out of the overhead. It's the fumes that will kill you, and fumes develop right away.

Doing something vs. doing nothing.

According to the story, "passenger was charging a mobile phone with an external battery charger when it suddenly caught on fire." I have never heard/read of any L-I battery spontaneously starting to burn for no reason. The guy with the battery was charging it! (doing something he had probably done many times in the past with no problems)

I fly a Mavic doing geology and charge both the iPad and the controller while I am hiking from one site to another. In the future, i plan to keep the drone case open for at least 5 minutes after plugging the chargers in.
