I have no idea why fungus and toadstools decide to grow where they do but...

I walked out of my garage the other morning to take the trash down to the curb and get the morning paper and this is what I saw. This is a small toad house that we have had in the garden for several year and, occasionally, we have a guest for a few day, but just why these decided to "decorate" it's "front yard" I do not know. The following day they were all shriveled up and yucky.

Probably because the sign said "Welcome".

👍

It’s the mulch, made out of evergreen bark, twigs, and leftovers. My guess is the mulch we see in the photograph is relatively new (this year or last year?), and you spread it on top of older mulch that had started to rot down into the soil. If you gently dig down into the soil layer, you will probably find patches and lines of white or cream colored soft fluffy stuff. That’s the actual fungus, doing a wonderful job of converting your mulch to all sorts of great nutrients for your plants. What you see as the sprouted toadstools is actually the “flower and fruit/seed” of that fungus.

Very good and I would wager that you will automatically look down at that spot whenever you pass it now!
