The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated: The Empire That Was Russia

This is an amazing person and exhibition of his work. The Library of Congress has digitized his work and it can be found at the link below.

He was assigned by the Tsar to wander throughout Empire and take photographs. What is amazing is his development of color photography.
He also worked closely with the creator of the Periodic Table. The man was a polymath. Enjoy these scenes of the Russian Empire prior to the Bolshevik Revolution.

I tried to translate part of this article using computer translator.
A cycle of color photographs taken in the distant 1911. Where did the color come from a hundred years ago? How was it done?
After all, just recently-50-60 years ago color photo was not that exotic, but extremely rare. More on my memory pseudo colored painted pictures.
A talented chemist, enthusiastic photographer, graduate of the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology, Prokudin-Gorsky, by 1906, publishes a number of articles devoted to the principles of color photography. During this period he so improved the new method, ensured the same cvetochuvstvitelnost of the entire spectrum, which could already make color images suitable for projection. At the same time he develops his method of transmitting a color image, based on the separation of colors into three components. He shot the objects 3 times through 3 filters-red, green and blue. There were 3 black-and-white positive plates.

He used trays projector with blue, red and green light to play the image later. All three images from three plates projected on the screen simultaneously, as a result of which the present had the opportunity to see color images. Being the famous photographer and editor of the magazine "Amateur Photographer" by 1909, Sergey Mikhailovich got an opportunity to realize his long-standing dream-to make a photo chronicle of the Russian Empire[quote=oregon don]thanks for the follow up! the colors were surprising.

Thank you for your excellent follow-up. I am even more impressed by this “Russian Renaissance Man” (full respect intended). A polymath is a person much like DaVinci in that he shows brilliance in diverse, seemingly unrelated fields. Thanks for your help in better understanding this man’s genius.

The process used here is similar to the dye transfer prcess and technicolor. Autochrome is also a very interesting early color process.
