when I loaded lightroom classic some 1600 photos were missingwere missing. after many agonizing hours and not whanting to use lightroom until issue is corrected, don't whant to mess it up again, I discovered issue. Not sure how to correct this
I have mixed up my external HD and now one drive shows missing potos but lightroom will not make a connection to them. the other HD also had some links to photos missing as well . Is there a way to bring both HDs together so all will be fine and life will be bettter. Thew are WD hard drives.
Need some help

I use LR with external hard drives all the time. It appears that LR thinks you moved your pictures from one location to another without telling LR so it is looking in the old location. To fix this, Open LR. When the opening dialog comes up it will ask you if you want to use an existing catalog or create a new one. Tell it to create a new catalog. When it brings up the Finder on a Mac (I don't know what its called on a PC), navigate to the folder your pictures are located in, give the file a name and tell it to continue. LR will insert the files LR needs into that folder and then open. Once in LR you will need to click on import.

Thank you. will give this a try. Wouldn't it be good that if finding the path to missing pictures could be done by searching key words that would open links to the keyword?

The downside to creating a new catalog is that you lose all your edits. There is a way within LR to tell it where the "lost" image is; I have never run into the problem, so I can't tell you how to do it. The downside to the technique is that you have to tell LR, for each photo, the location of the photo. With lots of images, this becomes a lot of work.

Bottom line: new catalog means less work but lost edits. Old catalog and telling LR where each photo is retains edits but involves a lot of work.

Do you always plug your external into the same USB slot? (I don't.) Perhaps you have it in a different letter assignment slot, so LR can't find it. When you look at the list of folders, is the folder missing or just the individual files? If the folder is missing, click on the question mark beside the folder name and find it. Then your individual image files should get "found" all at once. (Works for me!)

Yes you need help. You can fix this but it will take some work, and on line replies are probably not going to do the trick. Do you know some computer savy people, nephews, relatives, friends, or businesses? If so I encourage you to elicit their help.

well I will keep you all udated at the outcome. I have hired a local business owner who specilaizes in literoom we will be at it on Friday. After hearing what I hade done she is confident that putting both HDs in at the same time she can get both to come together by recognozing one another. Well we shall see.

Well after 5 hours of hard work by the expert I hired all is back on track. She took remote controll of my computer with bothe external drives hooked up and going from one to the other found all the picture links and brought it all back in order. the big issue was me I caused this inadvertantly by getting my HDs out of order and my work was devided between the two. So neither drive saw all of my work, and neither coul link completley to my photos. what a big relife.
